Texas Republicans move forward with plans for an indoor convention in Houston, the state's biggest c

As the coronavirus pandemic engulfs Texas’ metropolitan areas, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has left the door open for massive indoor gatherings. And organizers are moving forward with some big ones, including the Texas Republican party’s upcoming convention in Houston.

Harris County, where Houston is located, has the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the state, but the Texas GOP plans to press forward with plans to hold an in-person convention from July 16-18 in the city’s George R. Brown Convention Center.

"All systems are go, folks. This is happening," Kyle Whatley, the party’s executive director, said Tuesday during a tele-town hall, noting the convention program is already being printed.
On Tuesday, Abbott granted local officials the power to restrict outdoor gatherings of more than 100 people, but made no mention of indoor gatherings. The Texas GOP convention is expected to draw about 6,000 attendees, roughly half of what it would expect for such a convention in normal times, according to Whatley. The party’s website brands its annual convention as the “largest political gathering in the free world.”

A geographical midpoint for conservative jerkfaces from around the state. Youth vote? Are many of the students even there in the summer? Especially this summer?

Just not Houston - that’s malicious planning at this point.

I’ve met quite a few nice folks from Bryan/College Station, so I’m not surprised, TexTowelie

And yeah, is a Hook’em and Go Coogs! house I’ve got here in Austin.

and have limited my social interactions since March. I'll say that when I met my new doctor a couple months ago he seemed like a good guy. Unfortunately, he was completing his residency and moved back to Nebraska.

I was a Longhorn when I was in high school, but since I went to Southwestern the chant I use most frequently is "Pillage Pirates, Pillage!"

You went to Southwestern. I don’t think I’ve ever known their mascot. I mean, my grandparents had a house walking distance from the campus, but somehow I missed that.

The Southwestern Pirates - ha, that’s fiercely cute.

My favorite Linda graduated from there, too. So witty.

and they were nationally ranked back in 1944 and 1945 when the navy pilot training program was there. They climbed up to #4 in the country and won the Sun Bowl both years. They discontinued the football program in 1950 and reinstated it in 2013 with a team composed of 96 first-year students. The team went 0-10 that year, but three years later the team won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 7-3 record.

Unless people were baseball, basketball, volleyball or lacrosse fans, then it doesn't come as a surprise that they aren't familiar with our mascot, Captain Ruter.

Odd trivia: Southwestern won the Division II National Collegiate Championship for handball in 2007.

That isn’t a convention, no it’s an assault on the city that’s already overwhelmed.

Take it someplace steeped in conservative, bible-beating sense of superiority: Abilene.

(I know there’s good, fair-minded people who live there, but I haven’t met any yet.)
