(61,730 posts)As a Marine who was on active duty during Vietnam but didn't actually go there, I didn't really 'sacrifice' a lot personally. In many ways, I got a lot back from it, including a career that lasted most of my adult life. Usually, when out and about, I wear a hat that proclaims my service so there's an easy 'fix' to that. I suppose subconsciously I like it, but whatever.
Any more, it has started to feel like an affectation, one of those reflex actions people do like share meaningless platitudes at tough times.
Mostly, I reply with 'thanks for noticing' and try to keep moving. But the oath I swore back in July 1977 still applies and yeah, shit like the story that triggered this response hits home. Trump has no regard for the 'niceties' of oaths given and fulfilled. He has no honor. That's the core reason why I hate him.

That is always worth a thanks.

(11,949 posts)But Im glad you wear your hat. I never served. I knew my career path in High School and got right on it. But we need people to serve our nation. With so few needed today unlike 1940-1975 it is good for young people who feel a desire to see those who served being given public respect. Many of the best people I know are veterans. Especially those that served in an all volunteer service. Sadly, few of those I knew that served in the draft force are alive. My dad was a Korea Veteran. He was ROTC at his university so had to serve. Not that he did not want to. He never talked about what he saw but he said it made him the good man I remember.
Now we just need to elect someone who will use our service men and women wisely. Something that, in my opinion has been missing for most of the last 40 years.
Oh, and thanks for your service.

(2,318 posts)I served in the Navy during the Vietnam war. I served two cruises to the "hostile fire zone:, but because I was at sea, I also never was shot at. Like you, I am uncomfortable when people "thank" me for my sacrifice. It would have been nice to get some of that recognition when I returned. Didn't happen until they needed cannon fodder for Iraq and Afghanistan. I also still live by the oath I swore on that January day in 1969.

(4,354 posts)Henceforth and forevermore, every service member should do a 180° turn in the presence of this traitor! Active Duty, Reserves, National Guard, retirees, veterans, dependents and especially widows and other survivors should show him their backs when Cadet Bone Spurs appears.
Its only fair: he turned his back on them.

(37,551 posts)Sometime between November 3 and January 20, if hes not able to steal the election again.
The chances of large scale civil unrest if he steals it again also just went up ten fold.
The level of treason from this MFer is sickening.

(88 posts)I want to use this. Whenever I tell someone I served in the National Guard and they thank me for my service, I'll ask them who they voted for, if they say trump, "Dont thank me for my service when you voted for a white nationalist fascist who wipes his but with the constitution and put our military in harms way."
By the way, this applied to George W too.

(10,297 posts)number of US causalities, and their names. Every GOP senator who did not vote to convict and remove Trump should be given the opportunity to publicly apologized to America and the families, have a 2nd trial and remove Trump, and then resign their offices.
