(2,035 posts)The no longer consider themselves to be citizens of the community, they are entitled occupants. It only matters when it happens to them and/or their family. Greedy, narcissistic, entitled. That is all that matters.
Rant over, for now...

(2,035 posts)is that after Nixon was investigated for Watergate and finally resigned the presidency, those many of those who were republican hardened their attacks on the prosecutors. The end of the fairness doctrine, the media empire of the Murdocks, Limbaugh, etc. Hate radio, Fox noise, et. al. Never really challenged by the establishment media, on air and print.
I'm sure that it is much deeper and insidious that this, but I remember being able to debate positions with people who are much more conservative than I and still being able to enjoy our dinner and share a drink together. Not any more. If politics even comes up then that is usually the last time were are together, so everyone generally avoids exchanging ideas and/or positions. And it didn't start with Trump. It has been growing for a long time.
Just my $0.02.
As a minister friend of mine said recently, "When your theology has to be twisted to match your ideology, then you need to search your soul and get the weeds out."

(11,825 posts)My husband and I were discussing this earlier today, about fireworks and loud music. He asked when this respect for others began to settle in and I agree with you - it was long before Trump.
And the sad thing (for me) is that I don't know if humanity has the drive to care.
Your minister friend sounds pretty wise.
