(5,477 posts)the Russians/Soviet Union 'tickle' our ADIZ and generate a response; we also tickle their defenses and get a response from their equipment as they activate the antiaircraft missile systems or scramble fighter/interceptors. Both find out a little bit about how the various RADAR systems, communications, and tactical responses work. The trick is not to turn on ALL of your defenses and give away the entirety of how it all works together - RADAR and communications frequencies and modes are especially sensitive.
Been going on for many years. I remember seeing pictures in the early-70's when I was in the Air Force of some of the Russian Bear bombers being intercepted and escorted. In more than one, the tail gunner was seen waving a bottle of Pepsi or a Playboy centerfold to the interceptor crews from his side window.

(35,300 posts)Immediately invade Bulgaria. Because while all the push is to punish the evil Putin, nobody actually wants that. It'd be killing the golden goose. And be messy.
Strongly worded letters are only for the truly efficient to be able to pull off with panache.

What I think most, if not all, of those who send these tweets and other calls to do "something" do not realize is these Russian planes are flying in international airspace. They have the same right to be there as we have to send our ships and planes into the Baltic or South China Sea
