A new strain of flu that has the potential to become a pandemic has been identified in China by scientists.
It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but can infect humans, they say.
The researchers are concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak.
While it is not an immediate problem, they say, it has "all the hallmarks" of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring.

(15,147 posts)Nature has inherent adaptability and some feedback mechanisms which are helpful for promoting the continuance of life, but humans are just one in a long line of huge stressors on life on this planet, which have more than once nearly wiped out life here.
While it might be poetic to imagine some sort of willful judgment being passed on humanity for what we're doing to the environment, there's no evidence at all that the real world works like that.
