at the convention at the last minute? Pence, Nikki Haley? If Trump goes out they still need his cult. Thoughts?
Editing to point out that he would likely finish his term but would say he isn't going to go for a second term.
I know it is unlikely. Just curious what people think.

I suppose they'd let Pence take the fall. Losing a presidential election is seldom good for your presidential future.

(66,293 posts)I don't care how solid her Talibangelical credentials are, and neither does the RNC. As you pointed out, she fills a useful niche for them as a 'moderate' Republican ( ) , but there's no way the RNC would ever let her get anywhere near the White House.

(44,990 posts)The clowns always get in line. The way Graham sees it, he didn't put his time in with Trump for nothing. As Ann Romney famously and unfortunately said "So I think it's our turn now".
Just watch Bloomberg swoop in and punk them all.

(2,208 posts)Perhaps Mitt, but since he found a little bit of his spine and dissed dump that they might be a little ticked off at him. That brings me to a seeming moderate, reasonable, Kasuck who is absolutely the opposite of moderate. Or reasonable. I think hed fit right in with the image theyd want to project (plus he hates women having any autonomy over their body and he hates unions and workers rights). Haley would be a shoo in for veep no matter who theyd nominate.

(1,665 posts)Ride in and say how he was anti trump before it was cool to be anti trump.
And by 2024, the trump name will for sure be toxic.

(64,854 posts)It was "only" 5 million popular votes, but nearly 62% of EC votes went to Obama.
Now, given the toxicity attached to republics, he would get creamed!!!
There would go any thought of 2024.

All will lose. Just not quite as badly as Trump would lose.
At least that is my speculation.

(31,914 posts)He voted to impeach, and the core trumpsters are ready to crucify him over that. Hes too moderate for the rabid racist GOP, he walked in a BLM protest!
No way Haley.
It would have to be Pence, as disgusting a thought as that is. Hes like Trump Light.

(13,056 posts)I would be interested to see some Biden/Pence polling to see what that race might look like. I think Joe would probably rated as the favorite right now. But four months is almost an eternity when it comes to elections. And sometimes they do come back. In 1988 Bush was behind Dukakis by double digits in August but came back to win.

(14,084 posts)He's got many of Trump's failings, plus a few loose screws of his own. He's boring and a terrible campaigner, but they lose the Taliban vote is they screw him over. He'd be perfect.

(17,471 posts)If the Republicans get a chance to dump Trump, they will want to make a fresh start. I can't see them wanting to elect the biggest boot-licker the country has ever seen.

(54,300 posts)No matter how flimsy the circumstances, the Republicans won't deny the nomination to a sitting president of their own party, even if that seat isn't even warm yet.
They WILL write off the election, and then get deadly serious in 2024. We'll have some serious SCOTUS tinkering to do and a very short time in which to do it comfortably.
