On the same day my county officials unanimously rejected a mandatory mask policy and my sister still remains unable to find available testing for her and her son, Gov. DeSantis took a massive axe and chopped through the beating heart of higher education in this state.
With a stroke of his veto pen, Gov. Ron DeSantis wiped out the entire $29.4 million budget for a suite of online education services that have become critical to students and faculty during the Covid-19 outbreak.
The move, barring action before midnight Tuesday, will kill the Complete Florida Plus Program, an array of technology systems that faculty, staff and students throughout Florida rely on, never more so than now, in the midst of a pandemic that has amplified reliance on distance learning. The cuts include a database of online courses and an online library service that provides 17 million books to 1.3 million students, faculty and staff.
At least 2,000 adult learners could be cut off from their scholarships and school accreditation could even be at risk without the resources housed under Complete Florida, which are used by students at high schools, state colleges and universities. Some 150 employees in Tallahassee, Gainesville and Pensacola stand to lose their jobs. ...

Gov. Jeb Bush must be positively reeling. ...Its time to learn the lessons from these heroic efforts and plan for a future in which public education can continue without access to classrooms not just because of a pandemic but because thats the future of learning....https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/05/03/jeb-bush-its-time-embrace-distance-learning-not-just-because-coronavirus/
I love my home; it's been a great place to raise my children. My grandmother was born and raised here. My father spent his summers here when he was growing up. This decision hurts.
We're stuck here for another few years, but we've made up our minds. When we retire, we're relocating. I know that sounds like giving up and leaving problems for others to solve, but we are simply exhausted after 26 years of trying to fight the rising tide of far right politics and the exploitation of low-information constituents.
These cruel idiots will never understand why a healthy and educated workforce is important for a strong and successful society. If I owned a business, especially in the high-tech industry, I'd be making calls this morning to get my company out of this state.
My emotions are so complex this morning, I can't figure out where disappointment, anger, frustration, and grief collide. I hate this state that I love so much.

(9,090 posts)it might not take much pressure now. the uni of colorado was getting low level pressure for years to pull their sports off the main CO limbaugh station and suddenly last sept limbaugh was demoted to a lesser station. in the last year the unis local govt recycling and alt energy program directors, local environmental groups, uni groups, as well as congressman joe neguse were aware of the absurdity.
the station may have decided it had to prevent the possibility of the uni pulling out and broncos and rockies joining in. it will take some journalist to find out.
one uni doing it and making it known will force many other unis to do the same.
that and limbaugh croaking will doom the GOP for decades, and get democracy working again.

(5,524 posts)I have spent the last 2 years heavily researching college for my daughter who is heading off to Ohio State this fall.
I begrudgingly admit that Florida has done really well relative to the rest of the country. They have kept their in-state tuition really low compared to other states. It is actually the second lowest in the Country (behind only Wyoming) and is less than half of many states.
Combined with the lottery supported Bright Futures Scholarships, many quality students can actually go to school in state tuition free.
The net result is that the Florida schools are moving up in the rankings because even kids who would ordinarily go to top schools are finding real economic advantages to staying in state.
Despite all that, my daughter desperately wants to leave Florida which is right on theme with this OP. We certainly understand so we are investing in an out-of-state option for her. Nevertheless, I have had to give credit to Florida for making the numbers work better than anywhere else we looked.

(6,854 posts)And if your daughter goes out of state, you will get your money back.
I have a close friend who desperately wishes her son had gone to UF Pace on line. It was all paid for. Then he could have transferred to regular UF in two years. He was too proud and went to Tulane (a good school) but he was going on line anyway for the last quarter.
Good luck with your daughter!

At this point, I just want her to have a chance at a good college experience. This corona BS is making it very hard on her class. They are going to convene on campus but the experience will be greatly diminished by many of the rules. Even with all of those restrictions, things may go haywire and she could be back home early. Just one of the many things that are so messed up right now.
Thanks for the well wishes

The only reason we live here is that I had to live in the territory for the company I worked for. We ended up buying a house next to my brother-in-law who is also a Dem and a really great guy.

We had conservative neighbors in L.A. who formed small, introverted (and happy) worlds for themselves there, excluding all the differences they didn't want, living much the same as they would in the small conservative cities. We've also known a bunch of cons who "hated" the city and went to find their Mayberry dreams in this great national sorting out, while libs pay gaspingly high RE prices to get all the cosmopolitan amenties.

We are ready to get out too. Although, I must confess it has a lot to do with the real climate and not just the political climate. The brutal heat in the near term and the sea level rise in the long term makes us want to leave.
Our biggest problem is where to go. We just haven't found a place that calls to us that isn't crazy expensive or just a blue dot in a red region.

I am losing my patience with our county. I see people all excited about the low hospitalization and mortality rates in both Florida relative to the US and Brevard relative to Florida.
Those are lagging indicators. They are failing to appreciate the leading indicators - positivity rate and median age. Our county's positivity rate tripled and median age plummeted over a matter of just under two weeks. That is an amazingly rapid change that should scare the hell out of everyone.
As the current surge of cases, mostly in younger people, transmit it to the older and at risk populations, we will see serious problems escalate and rapidly. I feel like my community and its "leaders" have tied me to the train tracks and I can hear the train's whistle around the bend.

I did it with the option that if I ever want to, I will go back to dry, hot and red. Over the years, I have put down roots. It is just heaven. Cool weather, I hate the heat. Rain, I love because I have lived in places where there is so little rain, there is always that battle. Here, water is in abundance. That makes me feel good. We collectively consider the environment, not perfectly but just something we do. It is a gentle place for me to age. Lol. I am a better person here so I do not think I will be leaving. Parts of the US are near becoming a wasteland, like a 'foreign country' as a poster said. Extreme to say but the similarities to eastern Europe post- war, or parts of South America come to mind.
Since I first visited Fla. in the late 1950s-60s when there were still vestiges of the charm of 'old Florida,' it's been a big part of my life, like a second home. And I adore the atmosphere of the Keys, Key West and the Caribbean.
The natural beauty, orange groves and agriculture, sunshine and sea, diverse population, the Space Program, Disney. For five generations relatives and friends have lived there and had vacay places from Miami and Lauderdale, to Melbourne with NASA, Boca, Naples, Jax. A beautiful state that had a lot going for it that's going to blazes, like too many other parts of the nation. Troubling.

(10,167 posts)then redistricting (gerrymandering) began in earnest when the GOP took control of the state legislature. They added a bunch of huge retirement communities in the neighboring county - full of the angriest, most reactionary, racist old people imaginable, who had been moving down here in droves mostly from midwestern states - and turned the area into a "safe" red district.
A far right Republican congressman was elected, then a few years later he was primaried by an even more extreme Freedom Caucus knuckledragger, because the "establishment Republican" guy wasn't far right enough for our district. This Freedom Caucus fool is given to making hate-filled, racist, anti-immigrant pronouncements on FOX News, so his "white power" retirement community constituents love him to death.

I wanted my children to grow up with relatives, knew my mom would be the best grandmother ever. I moved back and FL had changed some, schools were integrated and the race wars over schools had stopped. Then Jeb came in with all his lies and repugs took over, they think for good. Ever since then, elections are so dirty here, teacher pay declined precipitously under Voldemort, and now DeSantis is fine with killing us for the sake of "business". I certainly understand the drive to get out of here.

(15,536 posts)I remember having a brief conversation with a grocery store clerk here in Michigan. Somehow we got on the subject of how she liked it here despite the winters and that she had moved here from Florida. She was youngish and had two elementary-aged children. When I asked her why she'd moved from Florida to here she said in no uncertain terms, "Because I will NOT allow my children to grow up in a state that cares nothing about the educational system." I was like, "Wow."
This has been going on in Florida for quite some time now. Personally, even as a senior citizen, I would never move to Florida. My son lives there for his job and I visit occasionally but nope. I wouldn't be able to tolerate the summers. Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly like the winters here in Michigan either. Now, as a widow, I am in the process of having a home built in an over 55 community just southeast of Chapel Hill. For fun, I googled over 55 communities in SoCal--focusing on north San Diego County--and discovered for a cool half million you can basically get a double wide trailer in an over 55 community with a clubhouse and pool!
After we left California, I never looked back. Florida never appealed to me because the summers are too hot. We've been going through some rough political times in NC for the last 10 years because of the gerrymandering done by the Repubs after 2010, but we managed to elect a Dem Governor in 2016 with a good chance for him being re-elected and a good chance we'll also toss Tillis from the Senate.
The Triangle area of NC is pretty blue: Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill. And Asheville in the mountains is blue. The Wilmington area--by the beach--is kind of purple, but might be a place a former Floridian would enjoy. Housing is not crazy expensive there, either, unless you want to be right on the water. But NC has taken some hits from hurricanes in recent years and has a long history of being susceptible to hurricane hits on its coast.
If you haven't taken a look at NC yet, it might be something to investigate.
