As Texas sees record coronavirus cases, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says he won't listen to Dr. Fauci

Coronavirus continues to spread in Texas, hitting a record 6,975 new cases Tuesday after three previous record highs last week.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick defended the state’s Covid-19 response on Fox News Tuesday night, insisting Texas is doing better than New York.

“We’ve had 2,424 people die and New York has had over 31,000. Even California has had almost three times as much (coronavirus deaths) as Texas,” Patrick told Laura Ingraham. “And remember, those states have been locked down the entire time while we have been open, so locking down doesn’t work. If it did, those states would be doing better than Texas.”

New York has reported 24,855 deaths from coronavirus as of Monday. It’s unclear where Patrick got the 31,000 figure from.

Patrick then criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, for saying Texas “skipped over” some reopening guidelines during a Senate hearing earlier Tuesday. Fauci warned cases could grow to 100,000 a day in the U.S. if Americans don’t start following public health recommendations, such as wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

At precisely the same time in all three states.

So he manages to be more well known than the governor by getting attention for such spectacular stupidity.

New York City is extremely densely populated. People rely on public transportation because driving is expensive and inconvenient comparatively. They got hit early and shutdown maybe not as fast as they should.

People around the country watched national peak projections and believed we had one trajectory. You have to look at your own state's peak to understand where you are, and the national peak because people travel interstate all the time.

Comparing NY's total deaths after their peak to Texas's total deaths before the Texas peak is an amateur type mistake.

That's why responsible leaders ask real experts.

It's easy to throw together arithmetic on numbers. I do it all the time. It's harder to do it in a meaningful way.

Intelligent people rely on experts and ask questions until they understand.

But I bet taking a jab at New York played real well on Fox News and in Texas.

Failed sportscaster, failed bar owner, failed Limbaugh-wannabe AM radio hate spewer...and now, a failed state official who keeps a set of kneepads nearby for whenever trump visits Texas. An ignoramus who repeatedly states his wish that old people die from the virus to bolster the stock market. A piece of shit, even by Texas republican standards.

I trust I've made myself clear.....

But the sportscaster, Dan Patrick, is a different person, altogether. The tv guy is located in Connecticut and broadcasts daily on YouTube. Like his show.

I'm aware of the GOOD Dan Patrick; I've been listening to him for years. As for the BAD SCUMBAG TEXAS RIGHT-WING Dan Patrick I was busy insulting: He did in fact have a brief and embarrassing career as a sports spewer on one of the Houston TV channels, after he moved to Texas from Maryland and changed his last name from "Goeb" to "Patrick."

Sorry about that; I generally make a distinction between the two Dan Patrick's.

416 persons/sq.-mi. VS 108 persons/sq.-mi.

That simply means it takes longer for the virus load to permeate into their populace and it will. A number of rural areas in the U.S. are currently proving it.

That also makes the highly susceptible to complacency.......

Texans love big get-togethers in churches, bars, restaurants, night clubs and sports events.

Patrick is a typical cold-hearted, hard right-wing "laissez-faire everything" idiot.

shut down travel from Europe everyone there scrambled to get back here. A huge number landed in NY. This is why the covid virus in NY cases is the same as the one in Europe and not China. I really wish people would science more.

He and Abbott tried to defeat the virus with their BS, and prematurely reopening from trump , and it had no chance of working , and now will cause worse economic problems in Texas, with greater spreading of this virus. They are really looking pretty stupid doing what they've done, and the medical experts should be calling all the shots, not them. trump and republicans have failed , and are now destroying the economy in the process from it. It will take many years , not months to return it to where it was. The American people will not forget who is responsible for a long , long time.
