The whole Karen thing is so tightly tied to gender and race I don't think you can separate out gender and have a true male equivalent (the fact that a man can engage in exactly the same behaviors notwithstanding). There's a sheen of latent misogyny that I find inseparable from the "Karen" concept.

Oh, and we should be calling them "Ivankas"

It sucks when your name becomes associated with negative implications. In the way that "Karen" has been used to describe typically middle class or upper class White women who call the police on Black People and People of Color, I don't have too much of a problem with it. As with anything, there will always be people who misuse and expand the terms for sexist purposes (I.E. People calling any woman who stands up for herself, "Karen" ) and distorts the term's initial meaning. I have said before, "Moron", "Imbecile", and "Retarded", were all clinical terms at one point in time that were used to describe levels of intellectual disability. Moron and Imbecile are short hand for dumb or stupid. Retarded is used for similar purposes or simply to say something is "bad". Words are often corrupted.

There have been male equivalents for "Karen". As others have said, "Kevin" is one that has been used regularly. "Chad" and "Walter" have also been used, denoting an age difference in the offender with "Walter" being an older version. "Ken" has also come into use.

From my experience as a POC, there is an expectation that White men are going to have racial animosity and because they are at the top of the social pecking order, there wasn't any reason to label a White man being racist any particular name. They were just doing what White men do. Now, that sounds really general and horrible and I am sure that there are going to be a lot of White people that get upset with that, but that is my experience and the consensus that I got speaking to many of my family members and friends.

"Karen" is newer and currently popular because there have been a spate of White women getting into the faces of Black and Brown people recently which have been put into the public arena by cell phone video. Now that social consequences of that behavior is more regular, we are having a more public discussion about labels.

Just remember that what we are seeing is just what is being caught on camera. There have been many many more incidents like this for decades and many that are not caught on video or are not posted.

If there was, there would be umpteen stories per week about 'him'. Instead, it's just wall to wall "Karen".

Too many good people are named Karen. Pick something like Ivanka. For men, Donald has a ring to it.
