WASHINGTON Federal coronavirus unemployment insurance is scheduled to expire at the end of this month as the pandemic makes a resurgence in parts of the U.S. and 25 million out-of-work Americans are collecting benefits.
The Democratic-led House has passed legislation to extend the $600-per-week boost through January, but the Senate Republican majority is vowing not to continue that provision.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Tuesday that the unemployment benefit passed in the CARES Act in March won't be in the next phase of coronavirus relief, which he said he expects to pass by the end of July. He argued that it has encouraged many Americans to remain jobless.
"Unemployment is extremely important. And we need to make sure, for those who are not able to recover their jobs, unemployment is adequate," McConnell told reporters. "That is a different issue from whether we ought to pay people a bonus not to go back to work. And so I think that was a mistake.

(25,111 posts)unemployment will be on the rise again. Republicans sure do know how to destroy the economy. Seems like they do it all the time.

(12,712 posts)Judging by the overall state of things, that kind of thinking is going to lead to some very serious issues for this nation even a catastrophe.
Without buffers to mitigate the economic losses to the people themselves this is going to be very destructive to life, families, communities, etc.
This is no time to play the cruel game of crack the whip and false incentives that are actually impractical in many cases. The exponential growth of the pandemic which is partly due to mismanagement is going to force this to a head.
This is going to bite back like rabid dog and it won't take long to get there. The GOP, et al, botch their response, (but still get paid) and then withhold any help as if they are somebody's boss or master.
Eat it McConnell. We'll see.

(7,411 posts)In ruby-red states like Alabama, unemployment benefits are a joke. I have seen benefits denied to those who filed a COVID-related weekly income of $75. Without the federal money, they would have had nothing.
Yet, those are the states where the Republican Party is strongest, to laughable levels. Their citizens subscribe to oligarchical principles and don't think twice about it.
