While some pointed to the price with sarcasm or cynicism, others made the point that fascist and neo-Nazi groups use telltale shorthands like 88 precisely because they can be deployed in plain sight with plausible deniablity.
As Twitter user Emily Kahn pointed out: Regular people will hop in the replies here to say youre scared of numbers?? Or its just a random number! And not even realize theyre playing into it Good dogwhistles can get random people to defend them.
They start to see the opposing side as crazy or paranoid for seeing random meanings in things where theres nothing and they are then an effective tool of fascism by playing the moderate who only criticizes the anti-fash side, and thinks the fash side seem like normal ppl, she wrote.
Aside from Donald Trumps Twitter feed and the Trump Organisations online store, Trumps re-election campaign recently caused a storm with a series of Facebook ads featuring an inverted red triangle a symbol used by Nazis to label political prisoners.

(22,990 posts)3. You're welcome for the excerpt, here's the other article I meant to post.
The baseball's price raised eyebrows online in the aftermath of Trump tweeting a video of a supporter yelling "white power" and Facebook removing a Trump campaign ad warning about "dangerous" leftist mobs that included an upside down red triangle, a symbol used by Nazis to designate political prisoners in concentration camps.
The Trump Organization did not immediately return a request for comment.
The price point of the baseball is not the only reason for the merchandise drawing suspicion online.
A hoodie on the new arrivals page also sells for $88, but did not draw the same level of attention on social media.

Actually I believe a ping pong ball would provide ample space with room to spare.
