Some partygoers tied to coronavirus cluster will get subpoenas

Coronavirus infections among eight people are tied to a large party where the host had COVID-19 symptoms in Rockland County outside of New York City, health officials said.

But some of the partygoers are refusing to comply with contract tracers — and they will get subpoenas with possible fines of $2,000 a day, officials said.

Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert said at a Wednesday press conference that health workers have been trying to talk to people who tested positive after attending the party in an effort to contain what officials are calling a new coronavirus cluster.

“Many do not answer their cellphones and do not call back,” Ruppert said, adding that some deny being at the party. “My staff has been told that a person does not wish to, or have to, speak to my disease investigators.”

They'll come running if they get sick from it.

Some parents were upset their kids didn't get the full Pomp and Circumstance, so they did their own.

in the process of disease prevention. Enforcement options should be clearly delineated (and advertised) -- and judges should be extremely quick in backing them up.

In other words -- make it very clear to both contacts (and their lawyers) that this is not an optional process. Cooperate -- or encounter consequence.

This should be, and in fact is, as clear as the nose on your face. But some people need to be slapped around (almost literally) -- before "rediscovering" the nose on their faces.

(This might be unfortunate from a privacy/constitutional perspective -- but public health has clear precedence in situations of conflict -- and nowhere should that be any clearer than in the case of global pandemic.)
