The officers, Joshua Taylor, 25, and Brandon Dingman, 34, of the Wilson Police Department, were charged in connection with the death last year of the man, Jared Lakey, 28, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
On July 4, 2019, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Dingman were responding to a call that involved Mr. Lakeys acting in a disorderly way, according to the State Bureau of Investigation.
When Mr. Lakey would not comply with the officers commands, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Dingman used their Tasers a combined total of more than 50 times, which greatly exceeded what would have been necessary or warranted by the attendant circumstances, court records said.
A Carter County deputy sheriff eventually responded to the scene and was able to help take Mr. Lakey into custody, according to the bureau. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Lakey stopped breathing and became unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital in Healdton, Okla., and then to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he died on July 6, 2019.
Court records said that such dangerous and unnecessary tasing was a substantial factor in bringing about Mr. Lakeys death.
The district attorneys office issued arrest warrants for Mr. Taylor and Mr. Dingman on Wednesday, and they turned themselves in on Thursday morning. They were booked on one count each of second-degree murder, which is punishable by 10 years to life in prison, according to court records.

(26,068 posts)I have some relatives I have nothing to do with who are cops. So racist, so sexist, so homophobic. Horrible people. And, they look like these goobers do. No one else in the extended looks like them, so it's weird.

(1,898 posts)It is a factual and thoughtful post. Yes - some people under the influence may not respond to tasing as would be normally expected.
Futhermore, were the tasers working properly - IOW, were they not providing proper voltage? I think there are a lot of factors to consider when incidents like this go down even though tempers are understandably running hot right now because of the many unmistakably abusive incidents we've seen on video. Thank you for the sober post.
