-------------
But cross the Atlantic and take a look at the US, and the outbreak is off the scale. There are 1,094 areas, collectively home to about 52 per cent of the US population, that exceed the 50-cases threshold. Almost the entire territory of Florida is shaded red. The worst affected area is East Carroll Parish, in Louisiana, where the rate of infection is 1,210 per 100,000 people.

Emphasis mine
You need to click on the link and scroll down to zoom in on the US map to look at it on a more granular level. The rates right now are shocking. Gotta tell you Trump is so bad he is actually making Boris look competent - and we at this point have had more excess deaths per 100,000 of the population than anywhere else... How the Trump administration has handled in pandemic in comparison to say Markel who he had the fucking nerve to call fat and stupid (all of the ironies), should be shoved in the face of this administration every single day.

(63,221 posts)I don't blame Europe one bit for banning us. This is a disaster, and one that was entirely preventable had we had competent leadership.
Trump should be removed immediately. Things are only going to continue to get worse as long as he remains in charge.

(2,517 posts)are all lower in that map and they have it rough early. I take from that an example of what smart (caring and following medical professionals & science) did; unfortunately, much of the 'worst' now tracks directly with states with republican governors.

(17,912 posts)did a hell of a job. Even Sununu in NH was up to the task. More importantly, the majority of people up here are taking it seriously. Masks are de rigueur here in VT, even though or governor won't mandate them. The only negative on his Covid-19 record. I occasionally see people without a mask, but not many. But even with that, we're getting occasional spikes in cases, so ongoing diligence is important. Something Americans as a whole aren't real good at.

(17,912 posts)in April was "fake news." Now they're learning otherwise, as their hospitals fill up and are forced to triage patients. Sometimes the price of ignorance and stupidity paid in lives. Hope they learn something from this. Doubt they will.

(42,770 posts)Explain how all of AZ could be red when much of it is remote and uninhabited. I'm dense, I can't wrap my head around the cases per 100,000 when you don't have 100,000 people there.

(88 posts)Think of it as ratios. If you have, say, 200 cases per 100,000 then you could also look at that as 20 cases per 10,000 or 2 cases per 1,000. So if an area of Arizona were reported to have 8 cases per 100,000 where the area only has a population 25,000 they would have 2 cases. If you look at some of the European maps you will areas that have 0.3 case per 100,000. This simply means that the population is less than 100,000, say 35,000 and they have 1 case. Same idea.
The whole idea of using a "per 100,000" as the denominator is to provide a consistent measure.

(42,770 posts)Doesn't that imply that you are talking only about areas that have to have at least 50 people?
