(8,029 posts)My sister's husband absolutely refuses to wear a mask (Tea Party republican), and he goes out and about all over the place, not wearing a mask. Then he comes home, and of course my sister won't wear a mask in her own home, nor will she keep away from him.
They're in their 70's. I'm really scared.

(8,910 posts)Being in their 70's, please tell your sister to protect herself.
And if she loves and wants to keep her husband, she should demand that
he quarantine himself in another room for 2 weeks.
Nothing less is acceptable.
I was about to post this.

(7,808 posts)People need to see what's happening, especially for the ones worst off. TV news didn't use to censor themselves like they do now.
Not that I'm morbid, but I think that we need more of this, but worse.
When I was a kid, I saw a Buddhist monk set himself on fire on the 6 o'clock news to protest the war in Vietnam. My reaction was confusion, not horror. We saw lots of footage of what was really going on overseas at that time and it galvanized people to act to stop it.
When I saw the movie Helter Skelter, I wondered why I didn't have any memories of the Tate-LaBianca murders. I thought that I should have some sort of memory of that time, but somehow I didn't. Then came the scene of the old woman in the rabbit hutch and a flood of old memories came out and the rest of the movie was like my own recollection of it all.
Americans are protected from seeing the horrors of life and we shouldn't be. If I get covid to the point of emergency lifesaving procedures, I will request a recording of me being intubated just so the public at large can get a look at what they are risking. Considering my pre-existing conditions, I probably wouldn't get drastic action like that, though. They can record me dying while in pain and gasping. I'm counting on my fellow DUers to make it go viral.

(16,723 posts)bubble of infotainment and whitewashed history, largely detached from reality. Vietnam was on the news every night and at times, quite graphic (real). Through that viewing, public opinion finally shifted at an extreme cost of blood and treasure. We have seen virtually nothing from two Iraq wars and Afghanistan. And that's only one topic.

(58,785 posts)The security by far most of us live our lives in is not a bubble. It's reality of living in these times in this place. War has changed so that very few fight it, and one of the factors was that leaders learned we wouldn't stand for a repeat of Vietnam; it's still fought far away in nations that tragically don't enjoy our security.
Children, and other vulnerable people, abused in the secrecy of their homes by their own families are by far our most dreadful and common horror stories. But normal people don't need immersion to care, it's built in. More remainders to protect adequate funding would help, but laws and practices, and social standards, that protect children (short of mandated monthly inspections of all children and homes) are already in place.
The answer to the problem of lack of personal emotional involvement can't lie in somehow making the horrors that happen to a few real for all. Nature equips all healthy people with the emotional protections needed to keep us from being too strongly affected, and the normal reaction of healthy people when disturbed is to change the channel. And, very on point, many have it too strong to become emotionally involved in the problems of others. Show them a problem, and they'll usually find a way to blame the victim.
And with that in mind, maybe there are other means of getting those people who are capable of upholding standards for society to understand the grave importance of that role. Because many are not, and when for some reason society fails to hold the line the numbers of those vulnerable to evil influences grows.
Right now many put the internet as the #1 reason among many arising from galloping change that good people have failed to hold the line. It's something new, not just in the 200,000-year experience of the human race but in our experience as a democracy. While good people were imagining a whole new world of enlightenment and wellbeing, bad people took it and ran.
In addition to controls on toxic use of the internet, how about compulsory voting to force more lazy and uncaring but relatively sensible people to vote? President Obama believes it would be "transformative."

Evolve Dammit
(16,723 posts)Wouldn't that be transformative? Only half of us actually vote in the U.S.. Stunning lack of connection or understanding of a really special right and a real voice for each person. I am hopeful for record turnout in November and accurate counting. Thank you for your very thoughtful reply.

(9,967 posts)You cant see horrific scenes on national news most nights and not be affected. The media needs to do a better job of portraying what is happening with this virus.
And we need to start calling Covid-19 the Republican virus since the actions of Republican governors are what has allowed this spike in cases.

(8,029 posts)If you really let people know how atrocious things are, they will tear down the country trying to make it right.
Look at the George Floyd murder, as a prime example. Luckily, we now have social media. Once people are graphically made aware of atrocities, they mobilze.

(2,412 posts)You are so right! In Greece they showed the brutal crack down on COVID patients in China and they saw,in all its horror, what Italy went through. So when it came time for Greeks to stay home and control the virus, everyone complied. People in the US need to see this!

(15,536 posts)Young people need to see stories like this over and over again because many of them still believe it's just "safer" and easier to get it and get it over with. Certainly there are plenty of older people that are in denial too. I have one who lives across the street from me (of course she's a trumper) who is 72 and she's flying somewhere for a vacation that she claims is just "so necessary for me because I've been stuck in this house and yard for months now" as if she's the only one. She is the type who never wears a seat belt either, so don't even mention her wearing a mask. Rules/laws/regulations are just not meant for her. She thinks she's special.
Needless to say I have nothing to do with her.

(402 posts)For all those of you who are acting like this is the first time you've been made aware of what hospitals are dealing with during this pandemic, where the hell have you been?! Didn't anyone see what was going in NY at the beginning of this pandemic. Don't you remember the semi-trailers set up outside to accommodate all the dead bodies that were overwhelming the morgues!? Or the bodies that were taken to an island to bury in mass graves? You guys act like this hasn't going on since April.

(7,473 posts)I have not seen them since January. Both are exhausted and upset. Their days, like all other health care workers are early AM to late PM. They go home thru the back door, into the shower. Clothes immediately into the washer. Grab a sandwich and go to bed exhausted,. Up again early AM and back to the hospital. They have two girls, my grandchildren. I am frightened for all of them. All medical workers, no matter what position they hold are working their hearts and heads off with no bright ending in sight.
To the non-believers, I wonder what you would do or say if you contracted this horrible virus. I bet you might have a little different outlook.
I don't know when I'll see my family again. They fear for me because of my age and other health conditions. I hope that everyone is doing their best to help themselves and others.
To those who laugh this off, no sympathy from me. I see what is happening and I cry daily. Not just for me but for all of us.

(2,412 posts)Same here!!! Our daughter is a professor of medicine training residents and she works in a hospital. For this reason we are not able to see her or her daughter! We had planned to Drive for 8 hours to visit but since so many Americans went out to bars and partied, we cant take that risk.
Our daughter is a pregnant physician and I worry about her and her baby. People need to start caring about others and take this seriously. The stress is getting to me, my whole face broken out with eczema. I remain calm on the Facetime visits for our daughters sake. She does not need an hysterical mom. Due to several viruses (not COVID) last winter it makes a total of 7 months that I am living in seclusion so far. I am making a big effort to stay sane and focused. Taking classes, baking desserts for friends (no COVID according to tests), gardening and encouraging single friends.

Fear is the republican's domain. They fill Americans with fear, and have been for decades. Anyone trying to horn in on the GOP's action is going to hear it on Trump's tweets, FOX and right-wing radio. Those are the real fear factories!
