What kinds of non-political solicitations do you respond to?

I just gave $5 to The Guardian in response to a popup when I finished reading a story. It's the 3rd time. I never click on a Washington Post link because they won't let me read without giving. We subscribe to the NYT, so I don't know if I'd otherwise get charged. Do they have a paywall? I'm concerned for the health and survival of newspapers. What kind of solicitations work for you?

also a local food bank and a Zen monastery.

I do subscribe to the NYT. The Guardian is exceptional, and I probably should donate to them too. (and the Washington Post, for that matter).

You are so right that without our news organizations we would be in an even more severe calamity.

Why can't the reporters and editor just work for FREE?

nb - I pay for subscriptions to the New York Times, New York Daily News, Washington Post and the Guardian.

I get your frustration about the number of links to WaPo that are behind a paywall. I finally just subscribed and have found it worth it. It would be way too much to subscribe to all of them, so I just picked one and it's the one I ended up with. I kinda feel the same way about NYT as you do about WaPo.

Non political stuff: I give a little bit every year to Planned Parenthood, America's Second Harvest, Doctors Without Borders, and my local food bank. How much depends on how I'm doing that year, but I do send something. In general, solicitations don't work for me. I have to care enough to just do it.

eta - for example, I donated to Chef Andres' World Central Kitchen this year because he has been a hero doing such good work to feed people in need. I may try to figure out how to put him in the regular rotation. He's amazing.
