The coronavirus is reportedly evolving, but the media seem reluctant to use the dreaded "e" word.

The trend seems to be to say the virus is "mutating", but mutations are singular events that happen to individual members of a species. When a mutation occurs that is more favorable to survival and reproduction then individuals with that mutation tend to dominate, overtake, and spread, thus the species evolves.

This article is really reporting that COVID-19 is evolving, but this popular misuse of the term "mutate" appears to be a sign that science deniers have been unfortunately successful in spreading the notion that biological evolution doesn't exist.
