'The barn's on fire': The Phoenix mayor and Arizona's former health director detail how the state's

coronavirus response went from successful to catastrophic

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego blames her state's Republican governor, Doug Ducey, for the explosion of coronavirus cases in Arizona.

Gallego, a Democrat who leads one of the country's fastest-growing cities, argued that Ducey's decision to lift his state-wide lockdown order in mid-May sent the misleading and dangerous message that the public health crisis was over.

"A lot of Arizonans took the message that we had defeated COVID-19 and could go back to normal life," she told Business Insider in a Thursday interview. "I certainly understand how eager people are to go back to the way things used to be, but it is not safe, nor appropriate."

For weeks in March, Ducey rejected calls from his own local officials to issue a statewide shutdown. He finally did so on March 30 but lifted the order after just six weeks.

I feel sorry for the responsible citizens of Az
Where does it go from here ? I think it’s going to be a long shelter in place if those in charge are sane enough or what?

They are likely losing far more voters to covid than dems are. The gop tends to be older, and they have an advantage in the silent generation demographic. Sure, a disproportionate share of those dying are poc, but it still doesn't make up for the differences in population totals.

And they certainly aren't growing among younger voters. Just because college kids party like it's 1999, it doesn't mean they support or identify as republican. Add any major demographic, and they are shrinking.

They are losing by attrition at a rapid rate. Yet, they keep doubling down on stupidity and make it worse.

Even if they somehow manage to implement a monarchy based on apartheid here, they won't have the guard bees to defend the hive for very long. But they don't seem to care. They just want to get pulled up to heaven when rapture arrives. Why they would be chosen is a whole argument in itself.

State officials also agreed to implement a crisis standard of care plan after Arizona hospitals called on them to do so to address the lack of essential medical supplies.

The state’s addendum rules, drafted from feedback from hospital leaders, proposed a points-based system to assess patients based on such factors as health conditions, age and survival chances. The plan then would score patients on a color chart: Red means the patient is at highest priority for critical care resources, yellow for immediate priority and blue for lowest priority.

The color-coded rules mean hospitals will prioritize and decide “who gets care, and what care,” Dr. Elizabeth Wilson, an emergency medicine physician for Medlink, told ABC15. “It’s going to be devastating for anybody who’s going to be involved in any of this, but when we have a crucial shortage of resources, that’s why you have to do it, we don’t have a choice.”

I feel so bad for our medical professionals. Many will have PTSD after this.
