'Upskirting' officially criminalized in Germany, with up to two years' prison time
The European nations parliament passed a bill early Friday that makes it a criminal act, rather than a civil offense, to take and distribute upskirting photos, the Associated Press reports.
The legislation defines such offenders as those who deliberately take an unauthorized picture of the intimate area of another person by photographing or filming under their clothes. Those breaking this law will now face a fine or up to two years in prison.
The new law also prohibits the taking or distribution of unauthorized photos that display a dead person in a grossly offensive way. Perpetrators of this will also face a fine or up to two years behind bars.
Previously, the ban on offensive unauthorized photos only applied to pictures of surviving accident victims.
