Trump's Firework Show Moving Forward At Mt. Rushmore Despite Worsening Wildfire Risks

In just a few days Mount Rushmore National Memorial will host its first firework show since 2009, an event many fire experts say is a bad idea due to high fire risk in the area.

Since 2010 there has been a ban on pyrotechnics at Mount Rushmore due to the high risk of wildfire. The memorial is surrounded by 1,200 acres of established forested land consisting of the fire-prone ponderosa pine.

Despite warnings against the firework display and the increased risk of fire, Trump has insisted on moving forward with the event.

"What can burn? It's stone," Trump said about the 4th of July firework show during a speech in January, 2020.

The National Park Service stopped allowing fireworks at the memorial due to ongoing drought conditions and the increased risk of wildfires. The nearby Black Hills reported moisture levels in April and May of this year at 30-50 percent below historical average. The AP added that forecasts for June and into July will be hotter and drier than average, increasing the risk of wildfires.
