My step-son and his wife are die-hard tRumpers. When I mentioned our Covid-19 curve vs. other countries "it's just because we're doing more testing now".
I couldn't believe it, but people are actually buying that shit.
I feel that if I counter that bullshit with actual proven facts then I might be able to keep SOMEONE from falling to the dark side, but on the other hand I have to see these people several times a year.
Maybe it's just time to say fuck-it, right wingers aren't shy about endlessly spouting their bullshit, it's time for liberals/progressives to be just as aggressive.

(2,398 posts)It IS a higher-level skill.
I taught high school for 30 years, and I had students - otherwise bright - who simply could not translate graphs into words or vice versa.
I'm convinced it is something akin to dyslexia.

But I think with Trumpists it's just a matter of refusing to see.

(4,139 posts)In TX and FL it is over 15%. This indicates we are also not doing enough tests as the positive rate shouldnt be any more than 5% if we hope to control the outbreak.
I get the sense that the reason the graph of new COVID19 cases has a 7-day cycle is because there are certain days of the week (Saturday and Sunday) when we do far less testing than other days.

Look for websites ending in .edu, which ic where all the scientific studies live. The data for just about anything is online
and once you get used to looking for scientific papers ( weird titles for sure), it is pretty easy to debunk the Republican in ones midst.

Of all the dumbass things Trump has said, this bit about we wont have new cases if we dont test is especially infuriating. Probably because I work in health care.
My forehead is getting calloused.

(89,249 posts)My suggestion is to say something simple but don't get caught in an argument with them becsuse they don't want facts.
and they get more upset when they are proven wrong.

(21,141 posts)They are so brainwashed. Until they are directly affected and suffer they will never break from their stupidity. And even then its doubtful. We need a clockwork orange type of deprogramming In this country. And bring back the fairness doctrine and reinstate media ownership rules.

He is also hospice! I feel terrible for anyone that has him on their final weeks in life. POS should have never taken his oath.
On edit: He used to be a DJ, but the bottom fell out of that job. He has said becoming a nurse was the worst mistake of his life.

(21,046 posts)So is it his excuse that he just can't be forced to give a damn about anyone but himself?
Some people go into medicine to do research and heal people. Some people go into medicine just to prove how smart they are, and they are not in it to help people. I've seen both kinds at a major medical school.
In It to Win It
(8,250 posts)Start with a baseline of facts.
Point A (The baseline) Do you agree that we have consistently increased testing week after week or month after month?
Point B. Despite the increase in testing, do you know that the number of reported case were going down? (The myth buster question... More testing but decreasing numbers)
If they give an excuse or justification for the false information that they believe, thats where you end the conversation because itll only frustrate you. Youd be talking to a brick wall.

(111,255 posts)I've found that approach can make people a little less defensive because you're blaming somebody else who told them something stupid. It wrong foots them. I use the opportunity to change the subject--fast. YMMV, you might choose to pursue it. Or not.
It's better than banging your head into a brick wall when they stiffen up and get completely defensive, the more idiotic the statement, the harder they cling to it.

(16,105 posts)I came to a similar conclusion recently.
I've always tried to keep my social media relatively politics free, because I know I have right wing relatives.
But, they never shut up about their beliefs, so I decided I'm no longer letting them silence me out of some misguided sense of politeness.
Now, I've got a bunch of relatives who I will probably never speak to again, given who they've proven themselves to be.
The kicker? I'm glad they've shown me the ugliest side of themselves, because I don't feel bad about it. They are not good people, not decent people, they are hate-filled people. I don't need them in my life or my kids' lives.

(21,565 posts)it was relayed to my wife through my mother in law that he read online that some guy whet for a covid test but couldn't get one, but he got a call that he had tested positive. so since this ONE example exists he has concluded all the tests are fake and none one is even sick.............
don't want to get into the whole dynamics of this family thing but suffice it to say............. i rarely see him, and when i do, if we get anywhere near the topic of politics, i change the subject....

I'll delete them on facebook, I'll interrupt their stupid comments. I just can't take it. Damn i'm tired of it At the firemans club I belong to they already know they are going to get abused verbally by me so they are just quiet in their corner. I'm just tired.....So fucking tired.

(13,104 posts)I really dont try to change their minds anymore. Its virtually impossible.
But I can get their attention through bringing up a totally different but incriminating topic. They dont like hearing facts and truths. When they respond with inevitable lies or crazy change the subject again to another truth just like they do. Project their projection back.

ask them what in the world that has to do with increased testing.
then when you see the dumb looks on their faces, see if you can discern it from their regular look.
