Someone told me to go back where I came from today. But I got the last laugh.

Some woman took issue with my mask in Kroger. Behind me making all kinds of snide comments. I was just going to ignore it, get my stuff paid for and leave. She moved on to "I don't know why they can't just come in senior hour so we don't have to see them." WHAT THE WHAT????

Well that lit me. I turned around and said "Ma'am, I'm not doing anything that affects you in the least." Which of course set her off like Mt. St. Helens and ending with. "This is America and you people aren't going to stop us. If you don't like it here just go back to whatever shithole country you came from." I couldn't help it... I involuntarily bust out laughing.

Paid for my stuff. Started to go.. still giggling like a maniac under the mask. Should have just left. But no... I turned back to her and said. "Ma'am. You ought to know... I'm 5th generation Kentucky farm girl. I'm about as American as you'll ever see. But you are right, the current president is indeed turning us into a shithole country. All these flaming racist just need to crawl back under whatever rock they came out of and stay there." Well, I'm sure that's word for word, but it's close.

It isn't like me to create a scene. I'll about tie myself into knots to avoid a fight usually. But I've had it. My hackles were up pretty good. I guess I was louder than I thought. People in other lanes clapped... and some lady caught up with me to shake my hand.

2 hours later and I'm still pretty wound up. These idiots are just beyond awful. I mean this one was hateful on immigrants (why she thought I was is a mystery), masks, old people all in one. I was just standing there waiting my turn. Not bothering a soul and she starts up.

And still, I'm not sure if it's more annoying or hysterically funny.

Tell them, “Ma’am, or Sir, when your ancestors came to America mine were here to meet them.”

I got that lesson when a Native American friend of mine said that to me. I was talking about an ancestor coming over on the Mayflower. That was his response to me. It was one of the fastest awakenings I’ve ever experienced.

My great grandparents on one side were German immigrants to the US. But my father's father was Swiss and Algonquian. His mother was English (from the MA Bay Puritans), Mohawk, and Seneca.

I have a degree in Spanish and sometimes practice speaking it when I'm with naturalized friends from Latin America.

When people told me to go back where I came from, I said, "Part of my ancestors established the first colonies here and fought in the Revolution. The other part were already here when the colonists arrived. How long has your family been here?"

had a better answer one time. She is a naturalized citizen and we were speaking Spanish in a checkout line at Walmart when a customer behind us yelled out, "Speak English!" in a very couteous, sweet voice, my friend said, in perfect English, "What would you like me to say?"

I added, "She speaks two languages. How many do you speak?"

I’m a white, blond, blue eyed woman who grew up in Mexico. Your friend and I have that in common. As a gringa in Mexico I shocked a lot of people who tried to stereotype me. I also instantly made friends, especially with those people who were not too impresses with the Ugly American types.

from Puerto Rico and Latin American countries. Made a lot of friends from that experience. We formed a large, informal social group that got together for parties, picnics, birthdays, etc.

They were from several countries, e.g. Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecudaor, Spain, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and one couple in which the guy was Dutch snd his wife was Brazilian. It was like a "family" support group for people far from their homelands.

I used to introduce myself to newcomers in the group as "Soy la gringa," which always got a laugh. We shared holiday customs from the various nations, including a modified enactment of la posada for Christmas. They also spoke freely about their impressions of Americans and the US, which was educational for me.

We're all much older now. A few have passed away. I miss the old days when we were all younger and present for party reservations that took up half of a restaurant with 2 or 3 banquet tables to acommodate us.

In one way or another I’ve always been somewhat out of place wherever I’ve lived. I miss México. It was my first home. After I retired I moved to New Mexico because it’s like Mexico in so many ways. Spanish is quite commonly spoken here.

I love the community feeling of Mexicans and other Latinos. There’s nothing like it!

people I have ever known. I love the Mexican sense of humor. Four of us (3 Mexicans and me) were the closest in the group and hung out together a lot. We ended up in side-splitting laughs sometimes over our mishaps. A couple of them revolved around language when I lacked the Spanish word for something and tried to act it out.

Example: the time I was driving my friend's car down an icy back street because she was not used to winter driving. It started raining and I could not find the lever or button for the windshield wipers. Did not know the Spanish for it and she did not know the English. I tried to mime it while straining to see. She did not get my meaning, but suddenly said, "Caramba, no podemos ver nada" and reached over to turn them on. (Actually, I think she said hijole, not caramba.) I explained that's what I had been trying to ask about and we burst out laughing.

come to N.M. for a while and see if you like it. I came here from California. The Bay Area. I love it here. It snows sometimes in the Winter but it always melts in a day or two. It’s a solid blue state, with red pockets.

My family went to Mexico when I was 2 years old. My parents decided to get divorced and my mother got a job with the only English language newspaper in Mexico City. Then she remarried and we stayed there.

I got on a lady for leaving a cart in the parking near me and it started to roll back. Would've rammed a nice sedan I was parked nose to nose with. She started to say people appreciate leaving a cart handy, then I go-look look!! She grabbed it and took it away, then left it on the friggin' sidewalk several feet from the entrance door!! Couldn't bring it in dammit. I gave her the stink eye as she walked toward my car and passed behind. I could've taken her! 😄 When I got home, it kinda weighed on my mind all evening. It would never occur to them that we are trying to protect the health of the general public for the good of everyone because they simply cannot fathom that kind of social responsibility.

Trump let this virus spread, killing 130,000 Americans and causing all the inconveniences she is mad about. She should be apologizing to you for subjecting you and everyone else to the hell his incompetence has wrought.

How dare these idiots start this shit! And aren’t they SO surprised when the person they are harassing comes back at them?

I’m glad this didn’t escalate further, but there are times when a line gets drawn in the sand, and this was one of those times! Bravo!!!

And I know that conflicting set of feelings! You laugh at it. Or you ignore it so as not to give them the satisfaction of stirring your shit up., thereby proving that you are untouchable by their slings and arrows and whatever else they try to throw at you. Or instead of suppressing your anger, you decide maybe it's time to let these assholes know how they're going over with people. Probably with A LOT of people. Judging from your story, there were more within earshot at the store to approve of your reaction than there were who'd huff and puff about how supposedly unAmerican you are.

Even most of them, I suspect, have either read, seen, or uttered the phrase "melting pot." In elementary school, maybe. Probably even heard it used in a sentence. But their behavior now strongly indicates that they don't know what the term "melting pot" is talking about, at all.

in Vermont which seems to be leading the states in decreasing cases right now. There's an ordinance in the town where I shop and everyone must wear a mask to go into a business, period. And everyone does. The town attracts tourists, too, and now you can immediately spot them if they turn up on Main St. without a mask and a puzzled look on their faces.

She is a republican and in the last 24 hours she has been on a rant/rage. Attacking my posts on facebook and sharing many posts from rightwing blogs. I asked her why the sudden outburst? You seem to be wound up for the last day or so. She replied "I am not wound up, I am fed up." and carried on with a rant about something she is upset about. Personally I am wondering if trump's racist speech at Mt. Rushmore got her all riled up. And maybe the lady telling you to go back to the shithole country has the same problem.

they may be causing problems to increase by not wearing a mask . You’d think they’d stay low and quiet if they didn’t want to bother to wear a mask but quite the opposite in bizarro land USA plenty are loud and in your face at the store

Sun Jul 5, 2020, 02:51 PM

then put it back up. Don't move in any closer, just cough.

Luckily I live in New Mexico, which closed down early, has been cautious about re-opening, and most people are wearing masks. Stores here are getting firm about making people wear masks inside. And if anyone were to confront me about my mask wearing, I hope I'd have the presence of mind to cough.

After which I'd want to say, "Now I hope you get the virus and die" but I probably wouldn't.

What's going to happen if you do? People look at you? They're already looking at you - it's why people aren't bumping into each other all the time.

I agree with telling people off when they don't mind their own damn business - especially when they are that wrong.

Thanks for continuing to fight the good fight.

Another 5th Generation KY farm girl, and before that Virginia. Relatives on my other side came to the Carolinas prior to the Revolution. Somewhere in my family tree there was a Native American and we all have the cheekbones to prove it.

America. Waste of energy trying to make any of these understand, much less be glad, that it never existed. Bargaining and depression should be increasingly quiet stages. Some day we'll belatedly notice these losers have gone silent. No doubt with help from their families in a lot of cases.

In my call center days I took calls from our reps in India for customers who said they wanted to speak to someone in America. Fine they get me, with an English accent. My manager at the time - also an English accent. Some people did decide to escalate, feign understanding of English - to the point that when we got them we got one of our colleagues with a thick southern US accent to take their call.

Some guy asked me how I liked living in Texas. I guess he thought because I am not a Donnie suckbutt that I must be a damnyankee or something. I don't know where he thought I was from. Born and raised in Houston.

I think when they say "Go back to where you came from" they mean "You are not exactly like me, therefore you must be from a foreign country". Their brains have not gotten to the concept of "People in the United States come from lots of different places, as well as being born here."
