Florida and Texas both hit record highs for new coronavirus cases on Saturday

as outbreaks keep surging in the South

On Independence Day in the US, both Florida and Texas reported single-day records for new coronavirus cases.

Florida on Saturday reported 11,458 new cases, bringing the state's total coronavirus cases to 190,052, according to NBC Miami. The Florida Department of Health reported that 11,445 of the new cases recorded from Thursday through Saturday were among Florida residents.

Florida's daily case count record is just under what New York state's highest daily total of new coronavirus cases was in April, when the Empire state reported 11,571 new cases in one day.

Florida also reported two new COVID-19-related deaths on Saturday, bringing the state's death total to 3,731, according to data from the Florida Department of Health.

numbers come in. I live in Broward county, we have the second-largest occurrence of COVID in FL. Yet, my neighborhood was filled with cars yesterday because my neighbors hosted July 4th celebrations. My direct neighbor had more than 15 people over and nobody wore masks. I normally take my kids out with family and friends to watch the fireworks, not this year. People are plain stupid. I can't even blame Trump anymore. What happened to common sense?
