Let's clear up the confusion: Masks are our best defense against Covid-19
As people begin to interact more and more in public spaces again well before we have a vaccine available to distribute two things are largely what keep us from infecting one another: distance and a mask. And the research shows that the latter truly does protect respiratory systems against the barrage of Covid-19.
THE RESEARCH
Studies in the last month have shown the effectiveness of masks in substantially limiting the spread of Covid-19. National Institutes of Health researchers found that a simple cloth mask had blocked nearly all saliva droplets projected into the air when someone talked, versus the spray without a mask. Theres ample data that all sorts of mask materials are of value for limiting transmission, said Dr. David Beattie, head of bioprocessing research and development of Burlington, Massachusetts-based MilliporeSigma, the life sciences arm of Germanys Merck KGAA. Here is some of the data.
IF 80% OF THE POPULATION WORE MASKS
the rate of Covid-19 infection would plummet to 1/12th of its current rate.
MORE THAN 80% MASK PARTICIPATION
would drop the infection rate to nearly zero.
A FACE COVERING FOR THE MOUTH AND NOSE
reduced the distance of an exhaled deep breath by 90%.
