Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Monday that he believes there will be a fifth coronavirus relief bill, as the country sees an uptick in the number of cases.
"We will be taking a look at in the Senate in a couple of weeks another package based on the conditions that we confront today," McConnell said in Louisville, Ky.
McConnell added on the potential for a fifth coronavirus bill that "I believe there will be one."
McConnell previously predicted in early April that there would be another coronavirus bill, but, since then, Republicans hit pause on talk of another relief package, saying that they wanted to see how the nearly $3 trillion already appropriated by Congress was being spent.
Republicans are expected to make a final decision on a fifth coronavirus bill once they return to Washington from a two-week break on July 20. But McConnell said on Monday that he was "likely" to introduce a bill in a few weeks.

More likely relaity: Republicans consider a new relief bill as they see their chances of re-election plummet.

(1,206 posts)If there hadn't been flare-ups in the other states that we're seeing now they wouldn't even be considering it. I don't think the millions of unemployed people through no fault of their own in blue states mean much to him at all.
It being an election year however - and more importantly HIS election year - will force him to do something akin to the right thing...but not before a ton of posturing and fake hand-wringing.

He may want to look like he is now interested in these kinds of bills and not a serial bill for the people killer. It's all about the incentives to work and dignity, don't you know?
He seems to have been far more interested in make $34-million looking out for myself and his party while totally neglecting his constituents. Just look at the numbers for his state. Losing is the only result of GOP influence.

I would like to see infrastructure spending and direct payments to everyone. Many states unemployment systems are horribly broken so many arent getting anything.
We essentially wasted the prior spending because people cant wear a damned mask.

(82,849 posts)No hurry, Mitch. It's not like people are dying by the thousands and millions of people are out of work and don't know if or when they'll go back, and none of them have savings to tap into because their jobs pay just enough to keep them afloat from month to month. You're still drawing a regular paycheck, you're not sick, and plenty of graft is making its way into your corrupt pocket as you help the president drive the country off a cliff.
