"A house divided against itself cannot stand."

It is in the Scriptures and was in a speech from Abraham Lincoln in 1858, when he was running for the US Senate from Illinois.

Furthermore, he said, "I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided."
...

"It will become all one thing or all the other."

Once again, the house is divided against itself. It cannot stand.

Unfortunately, this time, it is divided by political ideology.

With a demagogue leading this nation, there is no guarantee that we will survive.

The Biblical reference, in my opinion, is more accurate than Lincoln.

Matthew, 12:25: “And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.”

I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free."

Although the 'housed divided' is often quoted, the context is usually omitted.

The Confederates threatened our survival as a democracy unlike any time before or since.

Except, maybe now?

At the time, the Federal Legislature & Executive was far from all powerful. Government meant, how the Union was governed.

The idea of our Nation and our Constitution was very important to him.

Last time, the slave owners lost. Their ideological descendants will lose again. I believe that good is more powerful than evil.

...is that every white in the South did not own slaves. It was primarily wealthy whites that promulgated and propagandized the idea of slavery to all the poor whites of the South, also, in my opinion. It became a part of the culture, which still lingers today.

Specifically, the fight between slave holding states and non slave holding states (the South and North) was about whether the new states being created in the West would be slavery states. The South wanted the new states to be slave owning states, and the North disagreed.

And in every war it's always the case that only a few wealthy people benefit, but they get lots of poor people to fight and die.
