This Is How Many Americans Say They Won't Consider Wearing Masks

As coronavirus cases continue to spike in states across the country, many officials have begun to require face coverings in their states in an effort to curb cases. Although masks have been proven effective in slowing the spread of coronavirus, the cloth coverings still seem to be a divisive topic. While mask usage in America has increased since the beginning of the pandemic, there is still a significant portion of Americans who say they won't even consider wearing masks.

According to new data from a Gallup poll, 11 percent of Americans have not considered wearing a mask in the past week. And while that's down from 18 percent in April, it's still a notable number of people. The good news, however, is that mask usage has gone up overall. "The percentage of U.S. adults who say they have worn a mask in public in the past seven days rose from 51 percent in early April to the current 86 percent high point," according to Gallup.

The increase in mask usage is a promising sign that the country may be on the right path toward slowing community spread. But with more than 10 percent of Americans not even considering wearing a mask, many places throughout the U.S. could still be at risk for spiking cases. And the issue remains divided along partisan lines: According to the Gallup poll, 98 percent of Democrats report wearing a mask in the past week, as opposed to only 66 percent of Republicans.

While there are currently only four states that do not require masks to be worn in public places, even in states with mask mandates in place, it can be challenging to enforce the ruling. While the uptick in cases has made some Americans more cautious, many continue to avoid wearing masks. And to learn more about the states that don't have mandates, These Are the Only Remaining States With No Face Mask Requirement.

Although I can't really bite anyone. Maybe that's what this guy was pissed about: he can't bite anyone if he's wearing a mask. Poor rabid little puppy-dog...

A big number normalizes it, and makes the jerks stand out.
96 would be nicer, but going from 51 to 86 in 2+ months is a big plus.
I hope it continues to rise.
In grocery or pharmacy, I see at least that level of cooperation. In hardware stores, or seeing folks in & out of the Circle K, not so much.

If you asked me, "have you worn a mask in public in the past seven days?" my answer would be "no" because I haven't been out in public in the last seven days (except for solitary exercise, which is exempted in my city).

Same for a number of people I know. It may be a small group, but maybe not so small.

18. not really. It has so far had zero political cost for them, and a lot of benefits.

Let me be clearer about what I meant: the mask stunt has failed and blown up in their faces because the pandemic has surged out of control. A fast moving disaster aided and abetted, quite obviously, by the people in power and their stunning idiocy. The climate catastrophe is a slow moving disaster, a disaster so formidable that even those of us who understand what is going on can barely comprehend how awful it is going to be eventually. But that is the difference: the results are not apparent enough in our very limited comprehension of change over time. So they can play their game and promise their flock that they can have their big ass truck-cars, and consume as much as they want whenever they want, and not have to worry about nothing, and because the disaster just slowly rolls out, there is no real political cost.
