Denver white woman accosts black man minding his own business- until other white people call her out

This video shows perfectly how black folk are regularly expected to justify our right to occupy whatever space we happen to be in to white people who occupy the same space without question.

It also shows what it means to be an ally. Bravo to the girl who not only took the video but also directly challenged this woman's behavior.

It's interesting how this woman seems very sure her fellow white folk are in alignment with her - "C'mere!" as if they're on the same team - and when she realizes they're not and she's busted, she just hustles away.

It is telling that she assumed the other lady would be racist. Hopefully she learned several lessons that day!

And apologies for being sensitive about the "pale" thing. Kind of a lifelong issue I've been teased about (although it "pales" in comparison to what black and brown people deal with every day, I completely acknowledge).

I don't have a problem with the "Caren" moniker, but I probably would if that were my name.

It was in the context of work, so I had to be diplomatic. About 15 years ago I was in social services and in a low-income housing facility to oversee a distribution of essential goods. A black man, resident of the building, was the sort of lead guy for this monthly thing. Usually we just dropped the stuff off and they took it from there, but there was one lady that kept calling my boss about 'problems' so my boss sent me to figure out the problem.

Problem was, lady was racist. We had already gone out of our way to accommodate her, making arrangements to have stuff delivered to her apartment so she didn't even have to interact with this guy. Well that wasn't good enough. She couldn't handle a black man in charge. "He was even a Black Panther!", she said. "Us white women need to stick together". I switched from friendly and warm to a brick wall. I told her that's not how this works, he does a great job, and we've done what we can do to, and have a good day.

Asshole.

We weren't social workers or anything, not involved in the housing complex beyond this monthly distribution. I did see him because I had to go back one or two times for other reasons and he was still the head guy. But if I recall correctly, there were never any more problems in relation to that lady. She probably just sat in her apartment, entitled, while some volunteer brought her the box of stuff every month, since she failed at getting him in trouble. No one else ever complained about him, people loved him. He was a nice, funny, interesting guy. They still lived in the same building, so I don't know, I'm guessing he avoided her because she was such an asshole, lol.

The difference is that this woman didn't have a gun and a pickup truck and the person recording this wasn't a participant in the harassment.

This is how black men get murdered just for walking down the street. And without cameras and objective witnesses, the story is that they posed a threat and the killers are believed - because they MUST have done something. Remember Trayvon Martin?

Okay, I'm gonna need for people who are calling this a slur, and "racial slur" to stop! Okay? When you are a "Karen," that means you've opted-in -- and if it don't apply, let it fly!

But the fact is, if someone is labeling you "Karen," that means you've done something to warrant that label. You're not just sitting there minding your own business. And generally it means that you've stepped into something--into somebody else's business--that you have no business stepping into.

And you've made a spectacle of yourself based on some degree of privilege that you believe that you have. If that applies to you, KAREN, then that applies to you! If it doesn't apply to you, then just let it fly! Why people want to...when people are like "oh, it's the new n-word"... ARE YOU SERIOUS, KAREN?! That is a Karen! Okay?

TRANSCRIPT of AMANDA SEALES (actress and comedian)

A "Karen" is a white woman whose oblivion of their privelege causes them to act in a way that is oppressive, and often-times... insane.

(video clip)

Some might think that a "Karen" is just a loud white woman asking for the manager. You know, disrupting your customer service experience. But I'm here to tell ya, Karen goes a lot deeper.

(video clip)

Karen is a white woman who is a descendant of those who came before her who could scream and get a black man killed, who could point and get a black woman murdered.

(video clips)

For me these videos are very triggering. I think that there's a certain level of like "oh-ha-ha-ha they're annoying" when you're just watching it. But when you're in that situation it is not an annoyance, it is a disruption of your being.

You know that as a person of color--specifically a black person--you are the one who's going to be in the situation of having to prove your innocence.

Thu Jul 9, 2020, 11:22 AM

I live in a fairly upscale neighborhood. It's pretty diverse (Bay Area). There's a black family a few doors down whom I know well. Awesome people.

Once a day, I go jogging around. There's a little enclave of expensive townhomes not far from me. They're built in a circle around a children's park. There's one entrance into the circle. It's a very closed off little island. I like going in and jogging around the circle. It's quiet, no traffic, and I know the distance, so I know how far I'm jogging.

I have never, not once, been bothered in the past year when doing this. I'm white.

Cue yesterday. I finished work and did my thing. The 15 year old black son of my neighbors was wandering around inside the circle of homes. He sat on a bench in the park and was eating a lunchable, just chilling. I noticed a guy in a fluorescent yellow work vest walk over and start talking to him. It seemed a little weird, so I stopped and walked over to say hey to the neighbor's kid.

The vest guy claims to be a security guard. He was telling the kid that this was all private property and he needed to move along. I interjected, no it's not. It's a public street and park. The guard insisted it was private. I asked where the signs are saying that. I walked over to the entrance of the enclave and looked all over. No signs. Nothing saying no one can be in that park unless they live there. I asked him to show me.

Then he says, "You should know. You live here."

Uh. No. I don't. For a year I have been in there almost daily. I have never seen any security, and I have never been hassled. I've even made small talk with people who live there when cooling down in the park.

No one was around that I knew. But, I plan to go back the same as always and see if I can get to the bottom of that one.

Neighbor kid and I walked back together. His whole posture was one of dejection. I was just pissed. Still am. We didn't talk directly to what happened. I just kept telling him that guy was full of shit. But I want to find out what the deal is there, and I want to make it known to the people I know who live there just what went down. Unfortunately, I didn't think to film it. I probably should have.
