Was set forth by the county....I expected to see everyone inside to be wearing masks, but only about 50% were. I asked the manager and he said it was required but they didnt have the authority to enforce it.
I called the Health dept and he said he would take care of it and sounded disappointed and frustrated by it.

I don't go to my local Kroger anymore - I can't risk it. Instead i drive 3 miles west into a major college/medical town. There many more people grasp the idea and masks are near 100%.

(6,847 posts)neither the establishments nor the public have much of a clue what the rights and duties of - well, anyone - are in order to be there.
Years ago I took a basic course i law for insurance professionals, and this is something that has stuck with me. One of the test questions discussed to prepare us for the real exam involved an office building which had clearl signage prohibiting anything from being put up on its walls without permission - a pregnant woman who was going to an appointment with her OBG, a tenant in the building - her sister, who was accompanying her - and a guy with political flyers intending to post them up. In the question, the elevator fell with all three of them in it, but the basic point of the the question was for us to identify the three people as being an invitee, a licensee, and a trespasser. The guy with the flyers was breaking the rules, and that made him a trespasser. Of course that is more tort law than criminal law (although "No trespassing" signage might help), but being able to identify a rule-breaker as a trespasser can't hurt.
(If anyone cares, the sister was the licensee - the building is open to the public who don't break the rules. the pregnant woman was the invitee - she had an appointment as an established patient. In most businesses, in order to be an invitee, you have to be someone like the plumber called in to fix the sink. Being a paying customer just makes you a licensee. To be an invitee, you need a stronger relationship.)

Has it occurred to some of these businesses that they're going to lose more customers without a mask requirement than with one?

(44 posts)Home Depot, like just about all the big box stores has employees that they station at the door to act as greeters. Granted, these employees look more like gannies than bouncers but logistically they are well placed to be at least the first line of defense. I do know that at one of Home Depot's competitors, Menard's, that is what they do and at least at my store the greeters are aggressive and effective. But that may just be this store... we are in Lafayette Indiana which is a blue island in a massive sea of red... I have found that enlightened hoosier behavior fades out at the county line.
How hard could it be? (here comes the 'snark' )
You put a sign over the entrance that says:
You may 1) Wear a mask covering your mouth and nose 2) Exhale 3) -or- Prepare your list at the Kiosks in Customer Service and we will shop for you for $3.00 per item and meet you in the parking lot. Please note that None of the Above is not an option!
Then above the aforementioned kiosks have another sign saying "This store will periodically sanitize this kiosk but it does not happen after every customer. You use this equipment at your own risk. Keep in mind that the person(s) that sat here before you to place their orders were similarly unmasked and possibly unwashed. You should assume as of now that you have been exposed to the virus and should take the appropriate steps. We Value Your Business! Thank you for being a Home Depot Customer!"

Today I went to drop off some stuff at my favorite thrift store. They have a sign on the front about masks. While I was there, I watched the 80plus aged lady who works the register admonish two people who came in without them.

I still saw a few people walking around without them. I saw a large man with two little kids, holding hands with one on each side. The kids had masks, but Daddy didn't.
Please don't gripe at me for going to Wallyworld. We DO NOT HAVE CHOICES WHERE I LIVE. That's easy for you to say in the city or the suburbs. The nearest health food store is 70 miles away. Hell, the nearest Target store is 70 miles away, in Tyler.
I have to go 150 miles (Houston) to get to Costco. The only national chains in my little town are a Dollar General and a Subway sandwich store. We have a small grocery store that's part of a local chain. Still have to drive 25 miles to buy anything substantial. Fresh bean sprouts and fresh alfalfa sprouts are TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR.

BUT, we DO NOT HAVE CHOICES. Wal-Mart took away those choices deliberately.
The really poor people shop at Dollar General and Family Dollar. Those are in the little towns. They buy up expired food and sell it in food deserts. Dollar stores exploit the community too.
The rate of murders at dollar stores is quite high. Either armed robberies or stuff that happens in the parking lots. They won't hire security guards and try to run stores with only two employees. I found this out in a recent article in The New Yorker. I haven't seen very many people wearing masks in my local dollar store.

(146,286 posts)As such, I'm familiar with all of the nearby hardware and home supply stores. I know which ones have what. When I'm working on something and need a tool, materials, or parts, I go to the store that has what I need. My first preference is my local Ace Hardware. My second choice is Home Depot, because it's nearby. My third choice is Lowes, but the nearest store is a 20 minute drive from my home.
None of the jobs I do around the house are emergencies, in most cases. However, I do not like going to multiple places to get what I' need. So, I go to the store that has everything I need first.
As the person you are questioning told you, he was working on a customer's issue and went to Home Depot because they had what he needed to complete the job. Not an emergency, but if you're working at someone's house, you need what you need and don't have time to hunt for a place of which you approve that might not have what you need.
Your question makes very little sense, really.
Kaleva
(36,294 posts)And as a former HVAC installer who can do electrical and plumbing work, I do a lot around the home. I also put in central air recently for my step-daughter and what I needed I ordered on line. My youngest step son wants me to put in a/c for him and his family and I'll do that same there. Order on line.
MineralMan
(146,286 posts)I order things, too, when I'm planning to do some job after they arrive.
However, I can't remember a lot of projects that didn't require a trip to some store to buy something I didn't anticipate needing, or a tool I couldn't find at the time (it always shows up as soon as I'm done, of course). So, off I go to pick up what I need, so I can continue the work.
For example, when i was replacing the idle air control valve on my 1996 Ford Ranger, I dropped one of the mounting bolts. It fell down and probably landed on top of the truck's transmission, given the awkward location of that IAC valve. So, I grabbed the other one and headed for the nearest auto parts store (O'Reilly). I know where their nuts and bolts are, so I went over there, used their thread gauge to determine the size and pitch of the threads, and bought a pack of four flange head machine screws the right size and length and returned home to finish the job. They fit just fine, even though they had 10mm hex heads instead of the 8mm hex heads used as OEM Ford parts. No problem.
I could have ordered them online. I could have called the parts store and arranged for curbside pickup. But, see, I didn't know the size or thread pitch. Ford Rangers with 2.3 liter engines designed by Mazda, use metric fasteners, despite inch sizes being used in the rest of the car. I didn't have a metric thread size and pitch gauge, and I wanted to finish that job that same day, so I could use my pickup.
It wasn't an emergency, but I needed those parts then, and not later. The easiest way to get them was to go to O'Reilly's and pick out the parts myself. $2.99 and 20 minutes later, I had four 6mm x 1.5mm pitch flange head machine screws, 2.5 cm long, just in case I dropped another one in that awkward location.
Note: I did order a metric thread pitch gauge and had it shipped to me, just in case I need one some other time. However, I would have still had to go to the parts store to get the new machine screws.
See, it's not always so simple.
Kaleva
(36,294 posts)Ordering on line has been a huge help.
MineralMan
(146,286 posts)I live in St. Paul, MN, so I don't have that problem. I still order a lot of things, though, both to save money and to buy hard-to-find items I need.
However, I still have to go and get stuff from time to time. When I do, I go to wherever the things I need can be found most conveniently for me and at a decent price.
Do I shop at Home Depot? Sometimes. When I built the 100' chain link fence around my back yard, for example, Home Depot was the only place that had everything I needed at one location, so I bought the materials there. I researched the materials, and drove to the particular Home Depot that had everything in stock. That one was about 30 miles from my home. There's one just five minutes away, but they didn't have everything I needed.
Do I buy at Lowe's? Sometimes. I bought my snowblower there, because they had the best price at the time for the one I wanted. Again, I researched the purchase online and went to a Lowe's that had one in stock. They loaded it into my pickup for me with a forklift.
Do I buy at local hardware stores? Sure. That's my first choice if they have what I need. I go there often enough that I know the store like my own garage. I know what they have and don't have. Same with auto parts stores. If I'm not sure, I check stock online before heading to a store, or call on the phone, if necessary. These days, most chain stores let you look up stock at a given store for a particular item. That saves me a lot of time, too.
My point is that I buy for my own convenience and budget, not because i like a particular store's political positions. If i need something, I need that thing, and will not waste my time or money to find a store that is politically aligned with me to buy it. All stores have local employees who are trying to earn a living. All stores hope I'll shop there. I go to the one that has the things I need at a decent price and that is as close to my home as possible. That saves me time and money.

(801 posts)Yes, we have mandatory masks when out in public. However, .... my son and I went to eat out the other morning. We got to the front door and he realized that he'd forgotten his mask. While he was running back to the car, I read the sign on the door. Something along the line of ..yes, masks are required, but if you have a medical condition, you don't have to (true). However, due to HIPPA regulations, we're not allowed to ask you what you're condition is, so if you walk in without one, we'll assume that you have a medical condition and seat you anyway. GOD BLESS YOU ! WTF???? What a convenient "out"! Needless to say, there were many unmasked, especially older, that entered into the place after we were seated. If you can't wear a mask, STAY HOME.
I say if you don't enforce the mask mandate, take the store's license away for a week or two. That ought to provide adequate motivation!!!
Also, why do stores put hand sanitizer only at the entrance? Sure, to protect the inside of the store, but after fondling your merchandise, if there is anything there, there's a huge chance of it getting on my hands. PUT SANITIZER AT THE EXIT TOO, PLEASE !!!

Mask wearing/distancing should be directed at a federal or state level, but if not, we have to still voice our concerns.
