The Covid numbers today are jaw dropping

Florida...roughly 9,000 new cases so far today.

Arizona... 4,000

Georgia...2,800 so far for the day

Alabama....2, 000 so far today, an incredible surge from the already high 800 plus every day for the past week.

If these rates are still considered part of the first wave, I dread what the 2nd wave will look like.

which really muddy the water. I've heard of family members who got sideswiped by something that sounds like Corona, sudden intense fatigue, headache, fever, then recovered,. This was before testing, in Feb.
The 2nd attack of the same symptoms 6 weeks later hit, flu test negative, corona test inconclusive. We know by now that lots of people were passing virus around before they knew they were sick, and we know that Memorial Day did create more cases, and now the 4th of July cases will be showing up the same way, with much higher numbers.

when we were at our COVID height, the numbers as they relate to days were so screwed up you just couldn't go day by day and get any meaningful information. You could never say, "Today was a very bad day," because either the day before had very few cases because they were being reported on different days, or some large facility (a prison) was reported over the space of two days and made this big bulge of cases on those days.

One thing they've got to do once this is over is get some kind of protocol on how to report. Or maybe the problem is you just can't get an accurate picture when going day to day. In which case they should stop doing it.

It is suppose to be a uniform testing plan....those directions come from the top...tRump left it flounder and even sabotaged much of the testing, PPE's, vital life saving equipment supplies. Each state tries to test but some really don't want the test like DeSantis for example...So, the fact that we are getting high numbers is based upon hospital reports primarily with hospitalizations...and what little testing that can get done.. One can deduct that if you have an ill covid-19 patient...many more are out there being positive as they had contact with this ill patient.

I'm just totally frustrated... I know the standard of care and epidemiology standards of practice....What we have going on now in the USA as a whole...is a total failure. Trump wants to give the appearance of recovery without even honestly attempting to recover...hopes they just die or go away...thinking no one will notice that!

Insane...We are in the upside down world.

4. My county is jaw dropping
Thu Jul 9, 2020, 06:01 PM
Jul 2020

Our first case was diagnosed 115 days ago. In the first 114 days we had 20 deaths. Today they reported six.

In June we averaged two new hospitalizations a day. The first eight days of July we averaged four. Today they reported 17.

Our positivity rate quadrupled in the last 16 days or so.

We are definitely in the first wave. I have a graphic I would love to post here to show how horrific our situation is, but I don't have a place to host the picture online to link to it.

It shows a long steady slow climb from the third week of March until about June 12. The rise gets a little steeper and then takes a sharp increase up around June 20. I attribute that to the madness of reopening our state and county over Memorial Day weekend. The lag time in feeling symptoms and getting test results makes that about right.

That sharp slope has not abated since, and still climbing. There is no leveling off whatsoever. I dread what it is going to look like around July 26 when we start seeing the impact of July 4.

And they are talking about opening schools in a month.

Having a hard conversation with my high school senior after dinner tonight. He's not going to have a senior year. We're considering alternatives and reaching out to his preferred conservatories and colleges to seek their input. We're writing the end of his high school career off and seeing what we can do to get him where he wants to be for the 2021-22 school year.

his two older brothers K-8 and him K-6. We had a fantastic eclectic diverse secular group of families back then. It was an amazing experience.

I don't think that will be necessary though. If DeSantis doesn't continue his budget shenanigans anyway. He could quite likely finish his education through Florida Virtual School if our school board doesn't come to their senses. If it came down to it, he could probably already pass the GED.

We're in a bit of a fortunate situation with this kid. He's already taken the SATs and has three years of transcripts showing solid academic work. BUT...that probably isn't even necessary. He's hoping to attend a music conservatory like New England Conservatory, Julliard, Eastman, or Manhattan School of Music. Don't know about the likes of Julliard, but I could see him getting into NEC. None of these schools care much about your grades or SAT score provided you have a high school diploma. It's all audition driven. They want to know you have the talent, skill, and determination to grow and succeed as an artist.

While he was looking forward to his senior year, (He'd be the BMIB - big man in band - He was set to make drum major in the marching band, compete for all-state and all-county again, have the whole senior big head kind of thing), he's also got half of his brain already off to college. Of my three kids, I think he's the best one to be going through this as a high school senior. The other two would be way more gutted.

We're definitely aware we're in a much better situation than other families having to make decisions about school this fall.

It is colder than New York during the Fall, Winter and early Spring, but it is beautiful country and he will be able to set his own living pace. I'm really hoping it is NEC kind of for that reason. It would make visiting everyone a lot easier. My least preferred is Eastman. I so don't want him going to Rochester, NY. No offense to Rochester, but it is not nearly as easy to get there from here as it is to get to Boston.

We did a campus tour of NEC the week of Thanksgiving last year and the kid had a lesson with their head of their trombone department. I can absolutely see him there and loving it.

While Boston is no NYC in terms of pace, it is fast paced and a young person can easily get influenced by the wrong things. For him to have grandparents who can regularly check in with him face to face should be highly beneficial to him, IMO. We will beat COVID19, very fast if Joe wins the Presidency, people will soon be able to fully get on with life and enjoy in-person interpersonal interaction again.

I live in Florida, too and I am shocked at our numbers considering the bragging DeSantis did a couple of months ago. I don't like the way he mocked those who made the predictions that are now coming true. In my area, the positive rates are around 20%. Considering the fact they were around 5% and then slowly climbed, that's a High rate. They are finding so much of it from people coming for medical care for other things. They are so far behind in testing that contact tracing is half useless right now and they are also short of PPP.

And they want to have the RNC down here and offer tests to all of those people when our own residents can't get one?

but, he ignores that the state is almost out of ICU beds. Deaths are a lagging indicator, yesterday night-early this morning, Florida set a new record high in overnight deaths. Deaths are starting to climb, in a pattern that infections followed a few weeks back.

Wear your mask. When I can’t avoid passing someone without one, I turn the back of my head to them as I pass. It is a difficult process and I have to use position markers, but I try as best possible not to have them breath directly toward my face.

By keeping convention, vacation, tourist services open people visit from all over the country. Then disperse to everywhere in the country, bringing the virus to kill us when they come back. I think other states are going to have to set up 3 week quarantines for people coming in from Florida. They are bringing death from Florida, Texas, Arizona.

Hell, inviting the whole damn country to our Grand Reopening Party for Memorial Day weekend. Hosting the AAU Junior Olympics July 25-August 08 right when we're going to start seeing yet another spike from July 04 festivities if my forecasts are correct.

DeSantis barely beat a flawed candidate that the majority of our voters selected. Even then, the MAGA-bomber unintentionally helped him by causing tens of thousands of ballots from strong democratic areas to be invalidated for no post-mark. I believe that Nikki Fried can beat him badly, hopefully our voters have the wisdom to see that during our primary in 2022.

I want to see republicans in the legislature get gutted this November, the trend is toward blue, I hope people see that a blue landslide is needed.

frankly it's hard for me to do.

trying to picture 30 million sick people and over 3 million dead -- we're talking mass graves.

if we get some solid palliative treatments and reduce that mortality rate to 0.5% that's still well over a million lives ended prematurely, and their surviving friends and family can't even attend a funeral to say farewell.

and probably at least another year for a safe, effective vaccine.
