She was the first one I thought of when I saw that haircut.

(34,070 posts)Portraying Trump as a woman demanding to speak to the manager of the Supreme Court sure looks to me like the meme is a denigration tied expressly to gender.

(79,302 posts)I just think it's funny as hell.
Period.
I didn't/don't bother to look at the "story" behind the story.
To me, it's funny as hell.

(10,900 posts)Besides, it's really close to his actual cut.
Ms. Toad
(34,070 posts)to assume that giving Trump long hair hair (that another poster identified as "Diane Keaton" hair), and using the catch phrase associated with calling someone a "Karen" is NOT portraying him as a woman.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)I think its funny because he looks even less attractive as a woman. Not because women are all unattractive. When people laugh at this they are laughing at him. Not at women.
Ms. Toad
(34,070 posts)Which is my main point - the image in the OP proves the point that the "Karen" meme is, at its core, misogynistic in a way that merely calling women "Karens" never could. It is literally being used as a gender-based insult.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)For lack of a better word, the moniker karen connotes exactly what kind of woman. This is not about all women. If it were then you have a point. I wont argue with you about using bitch as an insult because that is too general. I simply dont agree in this case.
Ms. Toad
(34,070 posts)even if it is only one kind of woman.
If gender was irrelevant, he would not have been portrayed as a woman - the comment would have been sufficient to identify him as that kind of person.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)Because the insult is about a SPECIFIC kind of WOMAN.
If it were a man who acts like a karen the picture would be of a man. A karen is not all women. It is only one type of behavior of specific women. Karens are gender specific. But women in general are not karens.
This is NOT an insult to all women.
Ms. Toad
(34,070 posts)to be misogynistic - in the same way that gender discrimination in the workplace does not have to be directed at ALL women in the workplace to be discriminatory.
When you use an insult that relies on being female to be an insult - especially when you are using it to insult someone who is not female by suggesting they are - it is by definition misogynistic - even if it only specifically insults a subset of women.
I'm sure you've heard phrases such as - you're a good Black, or (directed to Asians) - you're the good minority, or to LGBT individuals - it's just the flaming queens (or trans individuals) who are unacceptable. Gender (or race, or sexual orientation)- based insults are no less offensive when they are directed at a sub-group of the class.

(30,811 posts)Why did he have to be turned into a female to make this funny?
I've enjoyed the Karen meme a lot, so this was quite a jolt.
But where do we draw the line and say something is sexist? Is it okay because it is not women in general but just a certain 'type' of woman? She also has to be white, racist-but-doesn't-think-she-is, self-absorbed and oblivious.
Is there a male counterpart? I think there is, but he is not very fun to joke about. He is all the things she is but it comes out as gun-toting and cruel rather than loud and petulant. Or maybe I've jumped too far. Maybe "Ken" is a middle-management type and impotent in his anger, along with all the things Karen is.
Actually, the couple on the lawn with guns toward protesters a few weeks back are pretty much the Ken and Karen couple. So I'm going to say no, I don't think it's necessarily sexist since there can easily be a male equivalent.
Ms. Toad
(34,070 posts)is that to call up the meme, we portray Trump as a woman.
trof
(54,256 posts)It's not about 'women'.
It's about the 'Karens'.
The jerks who happen to be women.
I guess there's also a name for the male jerks.
Jerk.

(53,061 posts)and realizing that you were only talking about the smaller subset of Karen's who were victimizing you in both professional and private while engaged in sexual Congress I reduced it down quite a bit.
I am still curious what professional situations you encounter Karen's being Karen while having sex?

(53,061 posts)These Karen's were harassing while in sexual Congress and not while some other activity like the equally irritating but less interesting bowling Karen's, the completely incongruous lactating Karens, or the terrifying clowning Karen's.

(8,574 posts)You and Starfish Saver cracked me up in this thread. What makes the Karen meme so funny is because it's true to life. I'm old enough to have known and/or been traumatized by that kind of woman myself and I even have a cousin named Karen who's a Karen.

I want to know, how come he flaunts breaking the suggestions of health officials all over, which gives imbeciles the freedom to also break the suggestions, and yet he doesn't get it. I want to know why!! Someone in their right mind should take away all of his powers that are damaging our country!! This is my suggestion!!
