New York records more than 400,000 coronavirus cases since pandemic began
ALBANY Gov. Cuomo encouraged New Yorkers to redouble their efforts to stem the spread of coronavirus Friday as the Empire State surpassed 400,000 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.
New York reported 786 new cases of the deadly virus, bringing the statewide total to 400,299. New York City recorded its first case on March 1.
Despite the stunning number, the states infection rate remains largely flat, with roughly 1% of the more than 70,000 tests conducted Thursday coming back positive, according to the governor.
While other states are seeing mounting death rates and hospitalizations, New York continues to make gains as only 826 patients are currently being treated for COVID-19, 25 less than a day earlier. Only eight people died from the virus Thursday. In April, as New York became the epicenter of the outbreak in the U.S., nearly 800 people were dying daily.
