Personally I don't know anyone and none of the people I talk with online have mentioned anyone they know catching it.
I live in Los Angeles where there is a huge increase in cases but I have no personal connection with any of them.
I'm wondering who all these people are who have it?

My friends knew personally several people who died from it. Two of them lived in the Queens neighborhoods that were heavily affected. One of them lived in Westchester County, just north of NYC.

Unfortunately, until more people get it, and get really sick, I think a lot of folks even Democrats just arent going to make the effort/sacrifice to control it that is needed.

One of my choir friends lost her husband in early April to COVID very tragically. He had been in the hospital for several weeks and was transferred to a rehab facility. The facilitys first case was discovered that same day, within 24 hours he was sick and transferred back to the hospital where he died five days later.

The other friend lives in Houston and just tested positive last week. He's 76 and retired. He and his wife were going to parties and the gym and just being marginally careful (poo poo'd all warnings as over the top). He's moderately ill, but not feeling really bad. He's lost his sense of taste and smell, is mildly tired, and is convalescing at home. His wife has not tested positive, which I find suspect.

2 of them have died.
One is in his 20s - currently has it.
One in his 50s - survived, had mild symptoms.
One is his 50s - died, had an underlying condition.
One in her 60s - died, was extremely overweight and had dementia
I also forgot to add 2, friends of a friend. Both intubated. One survived. One died.

Six other ER nurse colleagues from her hospital have become ill as well. Two developed COVID pneumonia and had to be intubated on ventilators. Fortunately they survived, but have chronic lung disease now. This at a leading Atlanta hospital where all precautions are taken, but like others, N95 masks were cautiously reused due to shortages.
I also have a HCW colleague with whom I went to school years ago and who I was informed over the weekend had died of of COVID. While we'd not stayed in touch, it still got to me...
I come here to vent because I am angry a good bit of the time and don't want to share that with friends/family/colleagues.

She was diagnosed with walking pnuemonia, her daughter had all of the skin lesions kids get her husband was diagnosed with a sinus infection. Just recently, after a lung X-ray showed damage to her lungs that looked suspicious, she tested positive for antibodies.
One friend died (he was listed in the NYT 100,000), one has permanent damage, one was sic for more than two months. The others I don't know long term outcomes.
At some point, I'll get an antibody test.
During the time she had COVID, she intermittently came to work and - at least twice - I sat across the table from her (a scant 6') for hour long sessions.

(253 posts)One of my close friends was on a ventilator for 3 months and is in a rehab facility now- will never fully recover. All of these I know that died were age 45-65. Countless Frieda of my 17 yr old daughter had it in March and April. I teach in a public school and at least 7 of my close colleagues have had it, again with lingering issues. Except g TG or the teens, no one I know has fully recovered to the state they were in before.
The rest of the country has no idea what's coming. I have gone into public places (grocery stores, drugstores only) about 10x in the last 4 months. I walk alone on my street and have not been shopping, restaurant, etc at all. The guy in NL is about 40, had it about 3 months ago, pretty heavy, but nearly recovered. My friend in Sprout City was hospitalized for a week, on oxygen but no ventilator. He recovered, is about age 55, said it was really heavy.
The two in Dallas are a woman of about 70, and a godson who is 28 and an incurable party animal.
They both are recovering, but neither was a mild case. The guy in NL said it felt like an elephant was sitting on his chest for a week.

(13,421 posts)Dr. B. died very early on. He had been a kidney transplant patient and was retired. His family had no idea where he was exposed, and none of the family ever tested positive.
My mom is 90. She became friends with a nurse that helped her out after we got her out of rehab at a nursing home over a year ago. Holly is a RN and she and mom became friends. Mom had a MERSA infection and managed to beat it. Holly was exposed working a shift at the hospital. Her husband never showed as positive but one kid did. They waited a full 7 days for results.
Holly took about three weeks to feel better and was back to work a month later.

(16,685 posts)That has had a huge outbreak this week. 5 people have died since Monday. Both of my parents have tested positive but so far aren't displaying any symptoms. I feel like I'm on a deathwatch. Besides dementia each of them has underlying health issues and are in their 80s. We put them in there last year because they could no longer safely care for themselves at home and now look at where they are...

(35,956 posts)You've described a nightmare scenario for me as my parents are the same age as yours. My mum's in aged care and has underlying health issues, and my dad's in independent living, but with major underlying health issues. Mum's nursing home has been in lockdown since early March, and it's a struggle to even get my dad in to visit her every day. I can't imagine what it'd be like if there were positive cases in the nursing home. It's really hard with dementia as well. Until the pandemic, we always made sure a family member was with mum as much as possible to make sure she was being looked after properly (some lazy staff as well as a lack of resourcing), but when the lockdown happened none of us were allowed in, which really upset my dad...
I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for your mum and dad. My cousin was asymptomatic and I've heard of older people who pull through fine with no symptoms...

(420 posts)She was 83 and physically quite healthy but had early stage dementia. Her daughter was caring for her own ill husband so the mom was in a very nice nursing home that had no Covid cases. The company that owns the nursing home owns several others in the area, one of which was completely full and had widespread Covid cases. As there were many Covid cases in that town (and thus more $$ to be made from them), the company transferred a bunch of Covid cases to the Covid-free facility our friend was in so they could fill the other one up with new Covid patients. Of course, the virus quickly spread in the Covid-free facility and our friend died. Her daughters and son who were very close with her had to say goodbye to their mother over FaceTime with a nurse holding the phone. It was heartbreaking.

(35,956 posts)My cousin and her partner. They live up past Cairns in the Daintree, but they were in New Orleans on a vacation around March and noticed that bars were starting to close, and started to get a bit worried. He got a call from a friend who worked in DFAT telling them to get home ASAP before the borders closed, and they flew home and went into self-isolation, despite my elderly aunty insisting it was fine for her to go have dinner with them (thank goodness they said no!). On day four he woke up with a sore throat and a headache, and they were both diagnosed with coronavirus....

Once was early on when people weren't wearing masks and a clerk in his co-op who was interacting with him was diagnosed the next day. The other time was when he had to move his car out of the way when a repair man came to do work outside the house. He didn't expect to talk to the guy, so he didn't put on his mask.
