A lack of workers willing to run polling sites as Texas continues to report record coronavirus infections is forcing election officials in two major counties to scale back plans for the July 14 primary runoff elections.
Citing a drop-off spurred by fear of the virus, Bexar County, the states fourth largest, is expected to close at least eight of its planned 226 voting locations for next Tuesday, according to County Judge Nelson Wolff.
In Tarrant County, the third largest, election officials learned Thursday that the local Republican and Democratic parties had agreed to shutter two of 173 sites planned for election day voting after the parties were unable to find election judges to run the polling places.

(22,252 posts)All election decisions are made by a committee consisting of the two party chairs, a couple of representatives from each party and the head of our elections office.
Closing 2 out of 175 precincts when we can vote in any one of the remaining 173 is just not an issue.

(30,736 posts)will the election judges be there? Can they be expected to risk their lives to show up for work?
If you can vote absentee or by mail, please do so!

(22,252 posts)Here is the good news:
Because Tarrant County has new rules, a voter can go to any voting location in the county regardless of the precinct they live it. So closing 2 voting locations is really not an issue except for folks who are accustomed to voting in one of those 2 spots. There are 173 places where any one can vote.
We call it Voting Centers and it is wonderful! No more arriving at the last minute only to find that you are in the wrong location and you don't have time to get there. You can vote anyway.
This will be our third election with Voting Centers and we love it, and the voters love it. Our voting locations are well distributed all over the county; there is one in each precinct. There are 6 which are maybe 10 minutes from our house.

(22,252 posts)tons of disinfectant for us and the voters, distance marking supplies.
I am really pleased about the face shields.
Regardless of how many have voted early or by mail, we still have to be there for the voters who do get out and vote.
It is a runoff and those are normally very low turnout; I am expecting a fairly quiet day

B. The Dems are fired up and will risk all to vote. Cannot say that about the gop in 2020
