BALTIMORE SUN | JUL 10, 2020 AT 7:38 AM
At the Democratic National Convention in 2016, first lady Michelle Obama famously compared her partys campaign practices to those of Donald Trumps Republicans by saying, When they go low, we go high. As admirable as that strategy is, it proved a loser in the November general election to the down and dirty words and tactics of Trump, the king of transgression.
The Lincoln Project, a political action committee led by veteran Republican politicos and campaign media strategists opposed to Trump, isnt about to let that happen in 2020 as they seek to deny the president another four years.
When Trump goes low, the Lincoln Project kicks him in the groin, said Kurt Bardella, a senior adviser to the project.
I think all of us agree when they go low, we go high was a stirring moment that made for beautiful oratory, Bardella explained. And in an ideal world, that sentiment would win the day. But in the real world, the world we live in today where Donald Trump is president of the United States, sentiment is not a strategy that is going to beat Donald Trump. We have seen ever since this thug insulted his way into the Oval Office, his adversaries have been reluctant to fight fire with fire.

(260 posts)Not sure if their ads will influence voters. They have been airing ads in DC on Fox News. Not exactly an election battleground. They are clearly trying to make sure Trump sees the ads to get under his skin.
The more time he spends venting at the Lincoln Project, the less he spends on Biden or any (vaguely) coherent messaging. Also, he looks even more unhinged.

(23,527 posts)revenge against the senators who enabled trump and are promoting the democrats in those senate races.
They have money and a lot of talent.

(16,616 posts)reasoning for believing they were having an impact on picking off Republican votes.
They also stressed that the ads are only the tip of an iceberg and talked about their larger organization of volunteers and how they want to protect the vote.
They did say that getting inside Trump's head was the primary reason for their current media strategy.
I wish Bloomberg would jump in here as well, because he also knows how to get inside Trump's head.

(67,782 posts)I suspect Bloomberg will join in, too. But I think he's waiting until after the conventions and probably will concentrate on House and Senate races like he did in 2018.

(26,355 posts)The Lincoln Project's ads do a few things.
1. They fire our people up - we're now at the point where our side will crawl through broken glass to cast that vote to throw Trump up.
2. They demoralize the MAGAts. Maybe they won't change to Biden voters. But a few of them might see the repulsive shit that Trump does and not show up at the polls in November.
Part of that is through a bit of psychology - they're creating the impression that we're winning and Trump's losing. And putting ideas in people's heads like that tends to activate the subconscious, which finds ways to make it a reality.
3. They might change a few minds. Almost none of the hardcore MAGAts are going to change, but you might get the person who would vote Trump because their spouse votes Trump to change their mind. I don't think this'll move more than a couple percent, but I'll take 'em.
1 and 2 are where we get the real wins. When we show up and they don't.
And damn if I don't enjoy the psychological warfare against Trump - pass the popcorn!

(42,862 posts)Why would anyone refuse a helping hand? I'm DELIGHTED to have their help, and they seem to be doing a very effective job at getting-in some good blows and direct hits (and a few groin-kicks too!) Oof!
I can only LOL and SHM and RME at the idiots who would rather withdraw the attacks and make things easier for Trump (and the GOP, and Russia). All I'm trying to say is, that people who want to be a wet-blanket and who decry the anti-Trump messages, well... that (in my opinion) amounts to an act of kindness and compassion toward Trump. It would be an outright GIFT to the Trump campaign if we "called-off-the-dogs" now. Why would any people (supposedly on our side) want to do or say anything that helps Trump? That's treachery. We need a victory that's an overwhelming and decisive tsunami. I welcome all helpers and I'm thankful and grateful to have them join our cause.
