General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs this some new bs on reichwing media about masks? A friend's rw SIL says that surgeons
don't wear masks continuously during an operation (in response to a comment that surgical teams sometimes operate for many hours, masked). She said that that was not true, that they take breaks, go out of the OR, change, etc. this person is an ICU nurse, but a devout trumpian.

(14,895 posts)surgeries do surgeons do that. The overwhelming majority of surgeries are performed uninterrupted in that regard.

(537 posts)In the OR 2 different hospitals, as a Surgical Tech. Everyone in the room is masked, even the reps for surgical equipment. You don't go in that room without eye protection and a mask. The majority of our training was aseptic technique. The OR suite is closed off from the
rest of hospital due to the air exchange, pressurized air. Seems ICU nurse hasn't spent anytime in an OR. I need to add to this after re-reading OP. Surgeons do sometimes leave the room, various reasons. they do remove gown, gloves, and masks. But they do re-scrub, mask, eye protection, gown and glove upon returning. Not sure what removing mask after leaving the OR has to do with anything.

(53,740 posts)around other people in enclosed spaces when shopping, etc., or when dealing with drive-thru attendants who also wear a mask when dealing with you. You do your business and get the hell out. Take it off when you get in your car if you want. Outside of course you're safer but should use caution even on crowded beaches or outdoor parties.
It's not rocket science but I guess they want to linger at bars shoulder-to-shoulder maskless, or in sit-in restaurants for an hour or so, or trump rallies. And of course we've all seen since these re-openings that bars have been the super spreader venues, along with rallies, crowded church services, etc.
Hard to believe so many repugs are stupid enough to follow their maskless, orange turd leader in not wanting to wear masks when he's proven over the years that he doesn't make smart decisions, as attested to by the skyrocketing infection rates in the states that re-opened way too early at his insistence.

No bathroom breaks whatsoever?
That doesn't sound right.
=========
Yes, some operations take a long time. And what is this bathroom break thing you bring up now? We were discussing masks...
-
So?
I was responding to the statement that the nurse in the original OP was talking bullshit, and she's not.
Doctors do NOT stay in the operating room for hours and hours and hours consecutively wearing mask.
As far as wearing mask 24/7, who the hell does that?

(537 posts)We were told by our instructor 1st day of class, you hold it! Sometimes there is no relief for you. Surgeons as well. I did clinicals for 6 months, we all wore masks for hours and hours everyday, while in surgery.

We stayed scrubbed in for HOURS sometimes with lead aprons on under our gowns (for ortho). When the case was over, our scrubs would be soaked with sweat.
These assholes that can't put on a mask to pick up their carry-out meal could use a louisville slugger to the kneecap. I boil when I see videos of these horrid people.

Are you saying that doctors NEVER take a break during an operation?
If I were a doctor, and I had to take a bathroom break, I definitely wouldn't return with the same mask on.

(345 posts)I would guess that most folks who are smart enough to work in an OR are also smart enough to have a pre-op procedure list that includes "go to bathroom". Kinda like goin' on a road trip........
And in case a bathroom break becomes neccessary, you go basically go through the same pre-op scrub/gown/mask procedure as when you started.

Generally there are relief scrubs and circulating nurses.
We did a 28 hour case that was very highly publicized. They rotated 3 different teams in and out.
That still doesnt matter. There are some staff/surgeons that dont rotate out.
