Donald Trump has claimed that the US would be inundated with coronavirus, were it not for new sections of the border wall mere hours after his Mexican counterpart thanked him for avoiding the thorny subject during a summit meeting this week.
Addressing anti-narcotics officials, the US president claimed that the 250 miles of fencing erected on the frontier since he took office had stopped coronavirus spreading.
It turned out to be very lucky for us that we had the wall or we would have been inundated because they have some big problems there [in Mexico], Trump said, although he offered no evidence to support his claim.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador met Trump in Washington on Wednesday, lauding him for treating Mexico with respect and understanding. On Friday, the president, known as Amlo, repeated his thanks to the US president for striking a less discriminatory tone.
We thank him for not raising the subject [of the border wall] in public, Amlo said, although he acknowledged that it was mentioned during a White House dinner.

(51,104 posts)Nearly all 216 miles built since Trump took office replaced outdated or dilapidated fencing. Only about three miles of new border wall system [have been] constructed in locations where no barriers previously existed, according to Homeland Securitys June 19 status report on the wall.

Right on the three new miles, but you are correct about the falling down part being privately funded.
