In criticizing U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVoss demand that all schools reopen this fall amid the coronavirus pandemic, U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley said, you have no plan.
Teachers, kids and parents are fearing for their lives, she wrote on Twitter Sunday afternoon. You point to a private sector that has put profits over people and claimed the lives of thousands of essential workers. I wouldnt trust you to care for a house plant let alone my child.
Pressleys comments accompanied a retweet of a CNN Politics video of DeVos being interviewed about kids returning to school.
What were saying is that kids need to be back in school and that school leaders across the country need to be making plans to do just that, DeVos told CNN. Theres going to be the exception to the rule, but the rule should be that kids go back to school this fall. And where there are little flare ups or hot spots, that can be dealt with on a school-by-school or a case-by-case basis, and theres ample opportunity to have kids in school.
Ouch! Cruella DeVos will need some serious pain relief for *that* burn.
Well said, Rep. Pressley!

(30,807 posts)If Trump really wanted kids in school (and of course they could all take a merry wagon ride into a raging inferno for all he cares), he would have resigned and let somebody capable take the job of president.

(1,730 posts)1. Distance learning for all who can.
2. Distance learning + limited class time for all who #1 doesn't work out well.
3. Classroom instruction for any kid for whom #1 or #2 isn't a possibility or who might be at risk in some way.
It's going to be tough on the teachers. Funding would be a good place to start.

"I wouldn't trust Pressley to care for a Chia Pet." (Ms. Pressley does not have any hair)
"Has anyone ever seen Pressley and Steve Harvey together at the same time?" (see above)
To be honest, I really didn't expect this from any Boston news source.

(2,215 posts)Im dismayed that the network news seems to be pushing the back to school thing. On the National news tonight they asked 5 or 6 pediatricians about sending kids back to school. Their answers were the same blather about distancing, washing hands, more harm done by keeping kids out of school, kids dont seem to be as affected, blah blah. They were asked if theyll send their own kids back to school and the answer was of course! Absolutely! Big cheesy smiles all around. Not once did they suggest it might be better to use virtual learning. The fact is that we dont really know how kids are affected. They have been the most protected cohort. Their schools (and for a while playgrounds, movies, restaurants, activities etc) were closed and the kiddos havent really been out in the big old germy world very much. With covid raging thru the country and sending these kids to school I cant help but believe that a lot of our kiddos are going to be harmed. I dont understand why the news isnt talking up virtual learning or a hybrid of a couple of days in class and the remainder of the week in virtual learning. Anyway-I just needed to rant a little. Thanks.
