Fire, explosion on USS Bonhomme Richard sends 21 people to hospitals, fills San Diego skies with dar

An amphibious assault ship caught fire on Sunday at Naval Base San Diego, resulting in an on-board explosion that injured 17 sailors and four civilians and filled the skies with dark smoke, according to officials.

The entire crew of the USS Bonhomme Richard has been accounted for and all are off the 840-foot vessel, according to a statement from Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet. The 17 sailors and four civilians have been taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The statement said the blaze was reported close to 8:30 a.m. Several sailors were treated after an explosion, according to the San Diego Fire Department.

Approximately 160 sailors were aboard the ship at the time, officials said — far fewer than if the ship was on active duty.

That was the name of Revolutionary War Captain John Paul Jones' ship FWIW.

Bonhomme Richard or Bon Homme Richard, meaning good man Richard in French, may refer to:

USS Bonhomme Richard, several ships of the United States.
Les Maximes du Bonhomme Richard, the French title of Poor Richard's Almanack, for which the ships were named.
A pseudonym of Benjamin Franklin

Our local fire agencies say they've had lots of calls. Who knows what toxins we're all being exposed to from this fire?

National City issued an alert warning people to stay indoors, but so far other cities have not done the same, nor has the county bothered to activate its emergency alert system to provide any health information, which would have been a good idea. A ship this old could lead and certainly breathing in fumes from an explosion of fuel oil can't be healthy.
