and so worried that my nephew is still living there.
Michigans population is around 10 million. Florida is a little over double that.
Michigan has just shy of 77,000 cases with 6,300 deaths. Florida has 282,000+ cases with just shy of 4,300 deaths.
Admittedly, Michigan's numbers are not great, but they've been much, much worse. Hopefully Governor Whitmer's enhanced mask mandate will send our numbers in the right direction. I have lost hope that Florida will be there, any time soon. I wish I could convince my nephew to follow his sister. He's coming to town, next week, and I'm hoping he doesn't feel offended if I wear a mask, social distance, and don't hug him.

(9,257 posts)They are being as careful as possible. They only go to the grocery store or to get takeout food, always wearing masks. He works from home and she works at a health care facility and wears complete PPE. Some Florida folks do take this seriously.

It's just shocking that Michigan first started spiking in late March, early April. Florida's numbers didn't start exploding until June.

(26,251 posts)I'm heading out on errands, tomorrow. For the most part, people in my part of Genesee County have been very mask-compliant. This is a VERY Blue district, so maybe that's part of the reason.
I've made a bunch of cloth masks for myself but I'm going to pick up some paper ones to see if they are more comfortable when the heat returns. Of course, I'm going to keep wearing one, no matter how temporarily stifling it feels.

During several visits there to college buddies, he met a young lady who captured his heart and off he went. They are now engaged. We like her, and I think she will be a delightful daughter-in-law. Nonetheless, a part of me is having a hard time wishing they had never met.

(3,662 posts)My daughter moved down there 8 months ago from Iowa. She has turned totally to the right. She posts how masks are killing people and nonsense like that. It's breaking my heart and I'm so scared for her and her family. I'm so glad they made the mask mandatory.

(10,053 posts)Michigan has a real governor and we have DeSatan. While all states have some folks who are not taking this as seriously as they should and are not practicing safe behaviors, our governor here refuses to step up and lead. We have mayors from random cities that are trying really hard to fill that lack of leadership, but it's not enough. We are just dying down here and DeSantis could not care less...
