Florida health officials reported Sunday a staggering record of new cases in a single day: 15,300. If Florida were a country, it would be the fourth highest in the world in reporting new cases. The state would rank 10th in the list of nations with the most cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins University data.
At least 35 states are seeing a rise in new cases compared to the previous week, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
The US has recorded more than 3.3 million coronavirus cases since the pandemic began, meaning nearly 1 out of every 100 Americans has tested positive for Covid-19, according to Johns Hopkins University. At least 135,205 Americans have died. Across the world, 12.9 million people have tested positive for the virus.
Both local and state leaders in the US have said in recent weeks new cases are largely driven by Americans who have opted to resume gatherings and outings to bars. In many states, the average age of new cases has shifted downward, with more young people testing positive than ever before since the start of the pandemic.

(12,712 posts)Exponential growth is certainly possible without strict precautions in place as per other countries that have been successful and persistent.
Just imagine the line going up, and up and up for a very long time. If we have 3.1-million cases in a population of 331-million there is a potential there for millions of more infections due to the vulnerability of the rest of us. What would stop it other than prevention?
Schools are, to me, germ farms even under normal conditions. Force opening with close quarters and we are just pouring gasoline on a raging wildfire.
I think herd immunity requires something like 95% of the population to have acquired immunity, so that's not going to work at all and is not to be expected until we are decimated by this if it continues.

(3,282 posts)we would hit effective 100% infection In October if we had the 10 day doubling factor we were seeing before.
I agree. I was attempting to not alarm people, but you are right.
That's a sobering thought and the implications are gruesome in a multitude of ways.
