Live chopper video of San Diego Navy ship fire.

Last edited Mon Jul 13, 2020, 05:04 PM - Edit history (1)

This is presented by ABC News KGTV Channel 10 in San Diego.

It seems so weird to see forest fire water drops being used on a U.S. Navy ship.

Edit 5pm EST: Video will stop periodically as it appears chopper must go home to refuel and/or change crews. Video typically returns in about 1/2 hour.

Check back periodically at the above link for a new round of live videos of this tragedy.

I know zero about this, but you'd think they'd have a stout system.

Most of the crew was gone and most of the fire/damage control systems were inoperative. There were contractors aboard and the fire likely was started by a welding torch or something similar.

it sounds like this fire started in a storage area. And it wouldn't surprise me if some of the systems were disconnected for maintenance.

Maintenance periods are very dangerous due to the increased fire hazard. It takes a lot of work and vigilance to keep on top of it - a couple of simple mistakes can have catastrophic results.

A fire suppression system was inoperable when a blaze erupted aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego, so sailors fought the blaze with water, a top Navy official said Monday.

Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck said the Halon gas system had been turned off because it was being worked on while the amphibious assault ship was undergoing maintenance work.

This ship is a total loss.

Hoping the air and water pollution isn't a total catastrophe.

That fire is deep inside the ship!

I noticed they moved the other ship that was moored on the same pier overnight.

* a major U.S. Navy ship gutted with fire while in a major domestic military port, and
* a worsening global pandemic that's killed nearly 600,000 souls around the world, and
* the potential for a second Great Depression, and
* at the same time America has a total idiot for president, and

all happening within the same year?

ALL of yesterday's footage was from the opposite side of the USS Bonhomme Richard with those ship superstructures mostly ghosted by the smoke.

and earlier thought that today was the 20th instead of the 13th, and forgot you left the sheets in the washer for four hours, and have been distracted from your work all day: the words were just swimming around on the page.

I’ll be okay tomorrow. Just let me go outside and scream for a minute, then stand on my head. I’ll snap right back to normal. Mondays are always hard. Pandemic Mondays ... are often confused with Wednesdays.
