There can be no double blinded studies, cannot ethically expose trial participants to a deadly virus

A double blind study usually means that neither the doctor giving the trial medicine, vaccine in this case, not the participant, knows if they've gotten the real thing or the placebo. There is nothing about "challenging" with exposure to whatever. You simply wait and see if fewer of those who actually got the real thing came down with the disease less, or had a better outcome when testing a medication.

"Challenges" are not common in double blind studies.

Added on edit:

Which is why it is going to take a long time to actually get a vaccine. You're in the trial, but presumably you personally are going to continue to social distance, wear a mask, and so on.

Perhaps they should be testing this vaccine on young people who all then go out to the bars and don't mask or social distance.

Thank you for clarifying that.

Unfortunately, if the doctor knows which you've gotten, the results are less reliable than in a double blind study.

As someone who will happily take a good vaccine if we ever get one, I will not be fully trusting of the single blind result. There's a reason that double blind is the gold standard.

Well, of course we do not control each other. But after 30+ years we generally try to insure we are on the same page with big decisions. Like when I wanted a convertible. Yeah, still in the truck!

Thanks again.

Like you, I'm a scientist, so I felt a need to participate. Having second thoughts, though, as my elderly mother now has no one else to depend on.

Still waiting to see if that phone call/email ever arrives.

I’ve lost two people in my circle of friends and a third person that I know from my outer circle is in the hospital, on a vent and not expected to make it.

We need some progress forward and I appreciate your selflessness.
