Los Angeles And San Diego Schools Announce Online-Only Fall

As a Teacher and a Parent & Grandparent - This Makes Me SO HAPPY!

On Monday, Los Angeles and San Diego public schools announced they will be starting the school year remote-only in August as coronavirus cases rise in Southern California.

"The skyrocketing infection rates of the past few weeks make it clear the pandemic is not under control," a joint statement said.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 3,322 new cases of COVID-19 and 18 deaths. Local health department data show a rebound in hospitalizations compared with May.

Los Angeles Unified School District did not detail when, or under what conditions, schools might be able to open for in-person learning, even on a part-time or staggered schedule. San Diego Unified School District promised a "public assessment" by Aug. 10 of how soon they might return to physical classes.

"There were no plans for the six-feet distancing, so that was very concerning since throughout the whole COVID crisis, that has been one of the primary advisories from public health officials,” said Kisha Borden, president of San Diego Education Association."

"Borden said the teachers union issued a counterproposal for reopening that included smaller class sizes, more ventilation and robust testing."

“They’re trying to meet those needs, but I think they realize that reducing class size in order to provide for social distancing is going to require hiring a lot more adults in the schools,” Borden said. “At this point I don’t think they have the resources to do that.”
On response to the union’s proposal, San Diego Unified’s administration teamed up this week with public health experts at UC San Diego to design a plan for safe reopening."

"In a written statement, SD Unified spokeswoman Maureen Magee said the district will let the scientists decide when it is safe to reopen, but there are currently no plans to delay the start of school."

But I know how tough it is for all involved. I spoke to my grandson Saturday in San Diego.
He's 10. I asked if he would be going back to school. He said Oh yeah, happily. His dad, my step son,
is in the Coast Guard and mom is a secretary. They arranged their schedules so that one of them is
always home. Less income for sure. And GS and GD are hoping to return.
Oh well, as tough as it is, it's for the best. Even if schools opened, I don't think it would last long.
Tough for teachers too.
