(19,253 posts)In my home state of MI, max UE per week is $362 before taxes, that extra $600 a week is the only reason the economy hasn't collapsed. Layoffs are ongoing, thousands of companies are still downsizing or closing all together. I've had close friends lose their jobs and it's just an awful time to be looking no matter what your skill set.
We have more layoffs at my work at the end of this month, I'm lucky enough to be safe for now, but I can't imagine having to look right now, especially in my field (Aerospace Engineering). No one in Aerospace is hiring and if they were, our business has laid off a couple hundred very well qualified candidates locally that I'd be competing with for jobs.
That $600 goes away and you're going to see people lose everything. I could cover my mortgage with Michigan's base unemployment and nothing else. I think they'll extend it, but only by a couple months.

(772 posts)no one to serve. Take the extra $600 and most will go down to $200 per week. No one can live on that. Period.
There are no jobs to find. There are no tourists downtown, and there won't be for a long time. No conventions, no sports...no business, no courts. The homeless population is already growing and about to explode. What then?
I can't see them not extending it for a little longer. All gods help us if they don't.
**add it doesn't have to be only unemployment. I would really like to see a basic $2000 a month each for 4-6 months so we can all stay home. Then we might have jobs we can actually go back too.
