Daniel Lewis Lee: US executes first federal prisoner in 17 years

US murderer Daniel Lewis Lee has been put to death, hours after the Supreme Court allowed the first executions of federal inmates in 17 years.

Several executions were initially delayed when a judge ruled on Monday that there were still unresolved legal challenges.

The condemned prisoners had argued that lethal injections constitute "cruel and unusual punishments".

But the Supreme Court voted 5-4 that "executions may proceed as planned".

Last year, the Trump administration said it would resume federal executions.

Lee was executed by lethal injection in Terre Haute, Indiana, early on Tuesday.

Some relatives of his victims had opposed the execution and sought to have it delayed, arguing that attending it could expose them to coronavirus.

Earlene Peterson, 81, whose daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law were killed by Lee, said she wanted the 47-year-old to be given life in jail, the same sentence as his accomplice.

1. Just for the record, he tortured and murdered an 8 year old girl.

2. No one questions that this was a vile man.

However, the death penalty isn't about what he did, it's about who we are.

If he had killed my loved ones, I would want to kill him, absolutely I would.
Painfully, horribly. Personal vengeance is real and powerful.

But, collectively, we recognize that is not the best way to handle things.

3. Yes. And those, like me, who oppose the death penalty would want him locked up forever.

This was of note because it happened so quickly after 17 years of no Fed. executions.

The grandmother was also opposed to the death penalty being imposed.

I bet nobody told Trump this was going to happen or he just assumed the person being executed was black.

If he know he was a white supremacist he'd have pardoned him.

6. This is starting to look like an illegal execution. The execution warrant expired at midnight and

it appears there was no valid warrant in place when it was carried out this morning. Good job, everybody!
