(64,852 posts)Guy stabbed someone.
Then considered attacking a cop? An guy with a gun, and he attacked with a knife?
I'm guessing Ruiz had some psychological issues.

(18,969 posts)There are a lot of crazies in that part of the state, this is not part of Lansing, Dimondale is pretty rural/trailer parkish.

(22,756 posts)there was a bar there that I remember my dad taking me into ... long time since I've been there...
an aside: :trailer parkish" I get, but it still is offensive

(8,166 posts)But even if the batchit crazy perp makes me angry, it's still outrageous that cops are shooting and killing people with knives. What a complete act of cowardice on his part.

(5,042 posts)While cops are absolutely out of control, it doesn't work that way when you've already committed attempted murder and are ready to do it again. Police don't want to get stabbed any more than you or I do.
The guy who died after stabbing a 77 year old over a mask can burn in fucking hell.

(10,795 posts)The cop was hardly a coward. Knives can kill and are deadly weapons.

(33,643 posts)But from what I've read, they're trained to shoot at the chest as it's the easiest to hit.
Cops lives are simply worth more than regular peoples, so ... you make them afraid they are going to be hurt, they get to kill you dead.
That's the system.

(33,643 posts)If they're shooting you, they have decided it's okay if you die.
I don't buy this explanation.
What we really need for the cops is a weapon that will stop someone from approaching them as effectively as a gun will ... without killing them. I truly believe such a weapon/defense system is possible with today's technology.

(2,547 posts)I don't have the range time some people have. I bow to expertise.
That being said, yes, if they have to use deadly force, it stands to reason that it is ok if the person dies. Donut just addresses the derp of 'why didn't they just shoot em in the leg?' As if a leg shot was just a step above an asp strike.
Just like he tackles the 'they didn't hafta shoot him so much' tripe in another vid...
They have less than lethal at their disposal, tasers, beanbags, etc, but that typically requires more than one officer to be on scene. Something that doesn't apply in this case. I guess she could have pulled a Sgt. Miller, and just hid in her car.

(4,131 posts)Police have a problem with murdering unarmed men of color. No one expects the police not to shoot someone who just stabbed an old man and is now advancing on an officer.

(101,265 posts)He came at her. He ignored her command to drop the weapon (2 knives and a screwdriver). He wasn't about to deescalate. He didn't give her time to get a taser.

(44,972 posts)The guy already stabbed a man. WTF do you want the cop to do in this situation. You go fight men armed with knives, and tell us how that turned out for you. If you are freaking alive, that is.
Dem2
(8,166 posts)Afraid I was wrong. Amazing how people react differently and suddenly completely forget that they'd be arguing for the use of taser.
LisaL
(44,972 posts)Knife is a deadly weapon. I would never be arguing for using a taser against someone who has deadly weapons.

(4,131 posts)Care to re-evaluate your description of the cop as a coward? The deputy was a she, by the way.

(18,483 posts)Kudos to the officer for waiting until the last possible moment before firing. He was actually able to hit her gun causing it to jam but she cleared it very quickly.
