Kofi Annan was an alumnus. When I went there in the '60s I got to hang out with students from places like Uganda, Iran and Vietnam (I even remember their names, which is more than I can say for most of my classmates), and that experience really opened my eyes. The value of a program like that is enormous, not just for the foreign students but for the locals.

She has a close friend in the midst of being deported because of it.

Apparently their issues involve the whole family so the student visa thing was only part of the problem. I don't know if this will allow her to stay or not if her family has to go.

But man was my daughter righteously pissed. Trump...creating one lifelong Democrat at a time.

The whole policy assumed that the students could actually go home considering that we are now quarantined from the world.

The whole policy was idiotic from the get go. Just purposely cruel for no real reason other than to be cruel and to rile up his base. Trump in a nutshell.

It was almost certainly one of Steven Miller's schemes to get rid of immigrants, using the pandemic as an excuse, though I can't think why allowing students on US visas to remain here while continuing to study via on-line courses would make the slightest difference wrt the spread of the virus. The perverse theory was that if they didn't have to be physically present in order to study they should go home - but why? Even if they're doing distance learning in the US they are still buying stuff in the US, paying rent, etc. What possible benefit could there be to sending them home? Is it that if they stay here and complete their degrees without interruption they might be more likely to want to stay here after graduating and apply for permanent resident status or even (gasp!) citizenship? Might they marry a citizen and eventually produce some of those dreaded anchor babies who might not be 100% white? I suspect that's what was behind the whole idea.
