Contra Costa DA receiving death threats after filing hate crime charge over Black Lives Matter mural defacement

In the days after her office filed vandalism and hate crime charges against two Martinez residents who attempted to paint over the Black Lives Matter mural in that city’s downtown, Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton has received numerous death threats, multiple law enforcement sources confirmed.

The barrage of threatening calls, emails, and social media posts got so bad that Becton — the first woman and the first Black person to serve as the county’s DA — alerted police in her hometown in case anyone showed up at her residence. So far, no one has, police said.

“We got word from the District Attorney that she was getting death threats, but she didn’t want to make a big deal about it. She just wanted us to know in case something did happen,” the police chief told this newspaper Monday. “We told the patrol officers in her area.”

Due to the nature of the threats, this newspaper is not revealing the city where Becton lives.

...With the woman's name on a bumper sticker, someone caught the plate.

The yellow banner had a permit, the black vandalizing of it did not.

Hoping that the DA stays safe and that the vandals are tried and convicted.
