This fellow is just beginning his career as a Republican apparatchik.
He looks at what benefit there may be to being a loyal Trump-humper vs a party that wrecked itself on the combination of Trump and ideologues, and does the math.

(21,431 posts)in the Republican party are deserting Trump. But they are looking out for their own hides and their own futures because Trump is so insane.
They want to be able to say in the future that they opposed him. Their policies and programs will still be terrible for the nation and the American people.
Good that it gets Trump's ass kicked out of office. But I am not impressed with the party that allowed him to get into office in the first place and waited until now to oppose him, after the damage is done.
I will never forget and never forgive, no matter what they do to try to rehabilitate their public image.
on the other hand, I argue that they are doing the only thing that can possibly save their failing party.
The lasting legacy of this period will be the damage that DJt has inflicted to the once great but now gravely compromised GOP.

(2,227 posts)But the GOP does not deserve to be saved.
Come November 4th I hope to be able to THANK DONALD TRUMP for completely DESTROYING the Republican Party. I also hope the fundigelicals' influence on ANY political level is ALSO completely destroyed.

(82,849 posts)Talk is notoriously cheap, and you're really short on the details of what you stand for that you think the present administration has betrayed. Because going into this administration, Trump was the darling of the entire Republican party, and has only solidified his standing among Republican elected officials. Maybe you need to re-examine your beliefs and ideals, because Trump has only been carrying out the stated policies of his Republican base.

Then they bounced back in 1980 and gave us Reagan.

(26,259 posts)Dad was a conservative guy, but he was also a rational, realistic guy. In some ways, Joe reminds me of my dad - devoted to family, and, as a proud Marine who served in President Truman's Honor Guard, Dad was whole heartedly patriotic. He would have been repulsed by someone like trump*. Oh, and my Dad was also a 'hugger'. As I tend to be, when it's appropriate.
Not so sure about my mother. She thought Dick Cheney was an 'honorable man'. I feel she would have rationalized and denied.

(17,862 posts)He has been voting Democratic since 1980 that I know of (empty suit Reagan). He might have been even earlier. I just know he hated Reagan with a passion.
It took me a bit longer. I was a Republican until about 2002 (Iraq War). In my defense my parents were Republican (my mom still is). Bush Jr. lost my dad when he kept calling up National Guardsmen for his Iraq fiasco. Not sure he ever voted Democratic before he died about 13 years ago.

A high school student is interviewed after vampires storm their prom:
[interview after vampire attack]: "They had fangs. They were biting people. They had this look in their eyes totally cold. Animal. I think they were Young Republicans."

(24,455 posts)So why is he a College Republican? Whatever fantasy philosophy he believes - something like financially prudent and small government trope, that track history of Republicans over the past 40+ years hasn't existed/
And he ought to look at the club members he is involved with in school. Bet a whole lot are like Trump nutcases that will carry on the Trump-Republican legacy.
He'll figure it out soon.

EVERYTHING that comes out of their mouths needs a second opinion. That's where the GOP's future dirty-tricksters get their training wheels. It's the breeding ground of choice. The Nursery of Non-Truths.
"College Republicans." Trust them only as far as you can throw your house.

It's too late for this "bravely running away" from the avalanche of evidence anyway.

(10,749 posts)I'd like to ask this guy what were the values that prompted him to support Republicans when he was a teenager. He's what, maybe 20-ish. We're talking 6 years ago. Obama was president. The republican president before him was Bush 43. What values did this kid support? Failure to react to reports that a major terrorist attack was likely? Subsquent lies that resulted in multiple wars, one of which is still ongoing? Did he support the collateral damage of more than a million Iraqi civilians? Did he support the economic policies that resulted in the Great Recession of 2008 that a Democratic president had to fix? Was he even a little put off by the likely fact that there were no people of color at his republican students meetings?
Also, at what point did he say enough is enough about trump?
I get it. This is a good development. But he still couldn't find a way to say that he was voting for Joe Biden. I would like to know why. Too many people of color? Not enough stuff for white people to go around?
